During cold winter months there are times there is little activity as you are house bound. With little room for activity, one begins to look around for something to do. My first thought went to any unfinished SML projects. Only a few unfinished chores here. Okay I tackled one of the unfinished chores. I need to have a small quantity knurled 40cal bullets ready for use. This also is as good a time as any to see how my home built knurling tool would perform on the smaller diameter bullet. I was pleased with the results. It was worth the cost and time invested to build it. The two circular ghost images are cannelures previously done. Another experiment that’s another story. Some might think I have a few screws loose in the cranium with this obsession of trying to shoot a 40cal bullet out of a 50 SML. You might be right as I enjoy the rattling of the screws when an idea develops, chuckle.

The knurled bullets look good. Thanks Jim, the knurling looks good and I hope it will add to my quest for shooting a 40cal bullet in a 50 SML. Over the years I have always seen better results using a knurled bullet with a sabot and now all my saboted loads shoot knurled bullets.

While I did get fair accuracy with the Hornady .40 200's, it was a slow and painful process. The bullets were not knurled, though. Wishing you success!!
I did manage to get my first buck with the .50 factory barrel using the 200 SST's. Happy day!

They look professionally done. 40/50 sabots ? Wonder how a 45 in a 50 cal sabot would do.

Superglue, or other adhesive?

Superglue, or other adhesive? Good suggestion and wish there was a good adhesive available. The plastic that sabots are made of are not adhesive friendly. Some newer plastic adhesives I looked at were pricey just to try. So I opted to try the sandpaper disc approach. By punching out disc size that fits into the 50sabot and gluing them back to back they will be placed between the sabots. My hope is that the driving acceleration force will keep everything in tight contact until the load exists the bore. Have to wait a bit before I have my answer. I just need two more outings this spring with the 250gr bullet load for some needed PT info. Then it's jump into the 200gr bullet loads. Now if this pandemic doesn't close the range again in 2021 I will have lots of results to share, hopefully good results, chuckle.
