It took a while but I got one in NY

This boy changed an otherwise slow season into some excitement on Saturday morning. He came down through the woods at 7:30 AM. He was walking at a pretty good clip so I picked a clear spot out in front of him and nailed him when he hit the opening. It was 50 or 60 yards. The crosshairs looked to be right behind the shoulder when it went bang. He ran after the shot showing no ill effects and I could see him for most of 100 yards. Naturally he plopped just beyond where I could see him.

I waited a fat 1/2 hour then went down and found blood. I was obviously a lung shot. Tracked him down to where I couldn't see him anymore and he was just a short distance beyond that. The load was fed 209a 10/50 4759/H4198 with the .40 cal 195 Barnes (knurled) with a Harvester light blue sabot from a 700ML .45 Pac-nor conversion that I did a few years ago. Got him all processed and the samples have been delicious!

Congratulations. Though your hit was a good hit, even a mediocre hit with a 195B will bring about a good result. Great load!

I know you did Rick, with VVN120 IIRC. That bullet has done wonders for my freezer over the years.

The 195Bs is so good! Always passthrus, always dead. At 2600-2700 2” hi@100 and 3” low at 200, <MOA, Wouldn’t a 225 TMZ be great!

I also used the 195 Barnes yesterday in my daughter's SML. About a 90 yards shot. No movement except downward on the deer. They still work. Good shooting on your part.

Steve, are you talking about a .45 cal 225 bore diameter tmz for sabotless or .40 for sabot? I remember one of RB's big reasons for building .45s was the preformance that could be had with less recoil than the .50s.

Though I exclusively shoot bore size now (2 40 calibers), I think that the vast majority of people shooting 45 break opens and 10ML2 45, etc barreled guns would do better with saboted 40 cal bullets vs bore sized bullets. Exceptions exist. I’ve long thought that a 40 cal , 225g TEZ would be outstanding, either sabotless in a 40 or saboted in a 45.
