I can't find a load that groups.Ive heard these guns are finicky. Are they so finicky that I should try 1/2 grain increments of powder?

I never found .5 grain changes to alter much. If you are shooting with sabots sometimes you can get plastic residue that needs to be removed to bring accuracy back. Also if the vent liner is worn too large or the breech plug orifice carboned up. All these are starting points plus are the scope screws tight and the front base screw not contacting the barrel threads. Just some ideas.

I had a gunsmith check the breech plug and everything else on it.He says the gun has only been shot a few times if any at all.The previous owner said he only shot it 7 times.Ive tried vithavouri 110 with 275 parker be.Ive also shot h4198 .Both powders have been tested with parkers and hornadys. The v110 I've used between 36- 41 grains. Also tried 50 grains of 4198

What grain bullet are you using and how tight is your bullet/sabot loading pressure?. I think the 50 gr of 4198 is a little week for a 50 cal. Back when I had a 50 I used 67 gr. of 4198 with a 300gr bullet and two handed loading pressure

I would agree with hunter, the VV110 is in the ballpark, the 4198 is a pretty light load. Both decent powders. One could bed the rifle but before I did that I would experiment a bit, perhaps different bullets and sabot combos that have worked for others. I do not shoot my .50s much anymore but they all did well. Using mostly .45s now but I would not rush off to do that yet. Hope it all works out and you find the perfect combo.

Make sure the front scope mount base isn't riding up on the recoil lug. The recoil lug on some guns stick up above the action. If so, relieve the front of the base so it clears.

Welcome, you are at the right place to learn SML and get that rifle shooting good. All good suggestions. Trouble shoot your gun for any of the above mentioned problems. Some MLII in 50 are "dirty girls" and do not begin to group until you have 3 to 5 rounds down the tube. I have one like that. Loading pressure should be pretty tight. My 50s like the .458 boolits in black crush rib or the orange sabots. boolit weight should be 300 to 325 in the 458 cal. Reloader 7 is my current favorite powder with 5744 next, use the search feature to find loads that have proven good for other members. Make sure the bore has been well cleaned before starting your shooting. The MLII came with a notorious bore full of cutting oil and grease and shooting it before a thorough cleaning would insure a difficult job of getting the bore cleaned up. So my advice is:
1. clean bore thoroughly.
2. try .458 bullets of 300 to 325 grain weight.
3. Keep us updated on progress and help will be provided.
4. HEAT is the ENEMY of sabots. You MUST shoot a cool barrel! In temps below 60F 2 shots will heat barrel too much for success. Wait between shots or get a "cool rod" to suck heat out of the barrel.
5. Reread #4. That was the main problem when I started on the SML learning curve.
6. Mark your ramrod. Double or overloads can bring very bad results when you pull the trigger. Safety is 1st, then accuracy.
Keep us updated with progress or lack of same.
Stay safe and good shooting! 10 ga

Make sure the front scope mount base isn't riding up on the recoil lug. The recoil lug on some guns stick up above the action. If so, relieve the front of the base so it clears. I am in agreement with this and also make sure your front scope base screw isn't bottoming out on the barrel threads. Be patient you'll get it figured out.
