Mine always liked 250 xtp shot AA 5744 for years. Then switched to n110 this year 40g. Make sure to weigh every load. Scope rings and bases tight action screws tight. Does it load loose or tight should be pretty snug my gun shot long or short Mmp sabot my wifes gun liked short ones . Pull the breech plug and make sure its clean new ventliner if you have one.

One of the old tried and true loads for the .50 MLII is 43.5 grains of 4759 , 250 grain Hornady SST ML in a MMP short sabot . and a Federal 209A primer . A senior member of this board called " Herman " developed this load for people that came to him with a Savage MLII that " would not shoot " . Savage uses 42 grains of N110 and the Hornady 250 grain XTP as their accuracy evaluation load ... however they feel 1.6" groups meet their accuracy standard . 42 grains to 44 grains of N110 and the 250 grain Hornady SST ML in a MMP short sabot has worked well ( 1.25" @ 100 ) for me in several guns . Another powder that shot very well was 5744 with 44 grain charges and the 250 grain Hornady SST ML bullet . This combination only produced a velocity of 1900 FPS . Don't forget that these MLIIs are not the the custom built , ultra high tech , sabotless , benchrest type of smokeless muzzleloaders that are shooting .500" groups at 2800 FPS !! Chris

From the beginning I had the first ML10 that used the modules . That gun liked 300 grain XTPs in MMP short sabots with 49 grains of RL7 at 1900 FPS . And shot about an 1" . Since 2007 I've had three MLIIs and each "liked " a different bullet and powder . However , one liked nothing ( 5 different bullets , 5 different sabots ,and 5 different powders ) and now wears a .45 PacNor barrel that Luke installed . That barrel likes everything !! Doug's Savage Muzzleloading site was set up to provide Savage shooters with information . Chris

Brux is also a good barrel,Krieger,Shilen,Douglas, there are several, all good choices going to a 45 that would serve you well.

Back in 2014 the cost was $436 for the barrel and $50 to install the barrel . However I'm sure the price is slightly higher in 2019 . The first group I fired with the new barrel has been my largest to date ... .980" with two touching and an " oops " to open it to .980" at 100 yards . ! Starting at 56gr working up a grain at a time to 60gr. using H4198 and both Barnes 195gr. and Hornady 200gr. bullets in Harvester Blue Sabots I have never shot a group larger than .825" at 100 yards . A few groups close to .500" but most average a little under .750" Six 3 shot groups averaged .680" .The velocity is only 2450 FPS but that's fine for my deer hunting with shots mostly under 250 yards . That velocity works well with the construction of the Hornady and Barnes bullets . When you factor in different bullets , powders ,primers , postage , HAZMAT fees , gas to drive to the range , and time the new barrel was a very economical solution to the finicky Savage barrel ! I put 2 45's together last summer (always need to have a backup). shooting 56 h4198 under a 200 gr sst in a blue harvester sabot shoots under 1" in both guns and fps is 2285. The one started off in a ml II action but is now in a savage 10 action (might be a 12) just because I really like the idea of the lugs on the bolt. The plain barrel i think was 430 or there abouts, my fluted barrel was 550 or so. Both have lukes bolt heads and breech plugs in them. I had put up my smokless for a lot of years. 2 years ago I pulled the trigger using bH 109 and had blood where she was but nothing else so I asked for help, the 1st question was which way did she go, I had no clue because of the smoke, So I built my 45s and I don't have that problem any more. My 50 loads are 5744 under 300 458 bullets in a harvester crushed rib. But that is around 1 1/2 groups

A very accurate load I developed for a fussy MLII blue in a Savage laminated stock using the 275gr. Parker Bal.Ext. in a short MMP sabot used 42 grains of N110 and a Federal 209A primer . It averages less than 1.25" at 100 yards at a very " snappy " 2275FPS . Never had the chance to take a deer with it but I feel the jacket is too thin for this speed and penetration on anything other than a broad side shot would not be deep enough ... and do't hit a rib on the way in ! but , I can't say for sure . My 50 loads are 5744 under 300 458 bullets in a harvester crushed rib. But that is around 1 1/2 groups In my 50s I still use 4759 under .458 at 300 grains in black crush rib too. Using Rel 7 to help stretch the 4759 hoard from going extinct. Have been trying some Thor and Fury full bore bullets too, with the Rel 7 but no final decision on them yet. No trouble with Rel 7 ignition as that double base powder seems always go boom. .458 X 300 bullet favorite is the Speer! Great penetration and terminal performance. 10

My two cents to your original question on powder measuring.
If a load is so finicky that 1/2 grain will make a huge difference, then that load is junk, assuming the rifle, and scope are good to begin with.
IMO, the final 1-2 grains are just tuning. If 60 is great, then 59 and 61 better be good, and very close to the same point of aim too.

Much more to it than just 1/2 grain adjustment of a powder charge .
