I had a friend install a Harrell's brake that could be used shooting sabot loads. The instructions say only .002 maximum gap between muzzle and brake, also to go .007 over barrel groove diameter and polish inside of brake. Could the barrel be crowned and still have a .002 or less gap? If this is not possible I will have him crown the muzzle and overbore and polish it .020 over groove size and shoot sabot less. Any help would be appreciated.

I haven’t installed any of their sabot specific brakes but have used many of the standard brakes with far more than .002” clearance from muzzle to inside shoulder of the brake and .020” over groove diameter. Several guys used the brakes as I installed them with sabots without issue. That being said if they give specific instructions, it shouldn’t be hard for your machinist to hit those marks. As for the crown I assume you mean flat acrossed the muzzle versus a 11° or so, I would just cut a flat muzzle and then just touch off on the rifling at 60° to help the sabots slide in there. A flat muzzle is arguably a contributor to better precision but leaves no protection from dinging your rifling/bore without a brake.

Thanks for your reply. My barrel is ready and I will shoot it this week. If I decide to go sabot less and have the brake opened up .020 over groove diameter could I still use a wool wad under the bullet? Thanks again:
