That caliber has brutal recoil even with factory ammo. I loaded some for a 78yr old friend with 40gr h4198 and 200gr ftx. I did not personally shoot it, but he said it was much more pleasant to shoot.

I have had a MGM 460 S&W for a couple years now. My first load 41 gr of N110 with Hornady 250ftx shot .5”-1” groups @ 2480 fps and extreme spreads in the single digits. and I pretty much stopped there until recently. I have been playing with 240gr Bear Creek ballistics annealed copper bullet (https://bearcreekballistics.com/) for better terminal and B.C. performance (.21 FTX vs. .25 BC). With The 240 Bear Creek I started with 40 grains of N110 and tried one group of 45.4 gr of 296. Speed was around 2480-2500 and good extreme spreads, but groups were 2-3” . Then I started backing down the powder .4 grains with N110. The group size or velocity didn’t change much until I got down to 39 grains. The group with 38.6 grs. Had 3 touching and group size was .62” , 2447fps ES of 12. Waiting for some decent weather to shoot 3 more groups of 5 with lower powder to find the sweet spot. The O.A.L. was about 2.60”. I was using a special profile crimp die from Redding $37(https://www.midwayusa.com/product/963761/redding-profile-crimp-die). It is supposed to be a better crimp for rimmed cartridges. This load has quite a jump to the lands but that doesn’t seem to matter. They say that about my 357 max also. I don’t think the recoil seems much different than my .45 Pacnor/Savage shooting 100 grs weight of BH209. The recoil does seem a little sharper, maybe because it is lighter. It did strip the forearm screws and I wound up putting a Stratton hanger bar on it and floating the forearm. I also did the Belm accurizing – hinge pin, headspace, trigger kit job. I am not an expert but I can give you the loads I tried and my data if you want or give me a call. Good luck.

Here is a picture of todays shooting the 460 ( if I added the picture right). Wasn't the best conditions but the loads shot well. It has been several years since I posted a picture and I tried to use imgur but cant find the direct link indicated int he help section that ends with .jpg and etc so The link below should work. target link

I used Bear Creak 240 gr annealed (they anneal all their bullets)all copper bullet and I shot one group of 5 with 45.4 grs of 296. Velocity was ave 2480 low ES of 2fps. About 2" Group 2480 2481 2479 2480 2479
I went back to N110 because it seems to shoot a little better and cleaner. It also fills up more of the case. I have a couple more targets to enter when I get time and can figure out how to post pictures. All reloads but at least in my gun (24" MGM Encore) new brass shot better than after it has been fired. Even though I only sized the top of the neck .330". I didn't size the new brass at all.

I think 296 would work. The groups were about the same. I didn't shoot the 296 with new brass. With newer brass this gun shoots under 3/4 " groups with 240BCB bullet. After the brass has been shot 2 to 5 inch groups. It doesn't matter if I full length size it or just the neck I am still trying to figure that out. I do have 25 new brass loaded and that might last me several years. I don't think the recoil is that bad, especially compared to a custom muzzleloader, but the copper bullets are over a dollar each and it is not a target gun so 25 bullets will last me a while. Also before I started shooting the 240 BCB copper I shot the Hornady 250FTX. It shot good even reloaded but it did a lot of meat damage on certain hits.

Lou you need a lb of 110. I have 1 can spare. You can’t find it there because when ever it comes in I buy it. I have a friend that works there he calls when it comes in I normally get it before they have a chance to put it on the shelf

Here is a target that summarizes the difference shooting the 240 BCB anealed copper bullet with new Brass vs. shot once and resized. I might just have to shoot new brass until I get this figured out. Might not even be worth the effort. imgur.com/zJBZr6A
