I have a McSavage with a 1 x 18 twist that I finally got to shoot but it seems to be a very fussy gun. Maybe twist too fast for 200 gr bullets? I'm about to order the McGowan barrel for my next project and I hope the experts on here can suggest a twist. I'll be shooting 200 gr (possibly up to 250 gr) in Harvester blue sabots at about 2600 fps. I was thinking 22 or 24 twist?

From what others have said, and my own experience, McGowen barrels are a little looser than others. Knurling .400 bullets so the sabot goes down the barrel tighter sometimes helps.
1:22 twist would likely suit your needs.

Pacnor 1-22 shoots sabots great. A 1-24 would also. That being said, my Knight smoker 45 1-20 will shoot them just fine. If i was building a SML to shoot sabots it would be with the Pacnor 1-22 or 1-20 8 groove. The 1-20 will have an edge if you want to shoot some of the longer 40s like the Pittman 402s. His 225gr is 1.27" long and a 1-22 is cutting it really close. Same bullet in a 1-20 is fine. Both the Fury 225gr and 250gr 40s are much shorter and should be fine in a 1-22. Both come in at just under an inch long.
Only problem with the McGowen is the land to land might be .451+ and a HSB is only .454 loaded OD. My Pacnor is spot on .450 which is about the right size for a HSB.

My Pacnor is spot on .450 which is about the right size for a HSB. McGowan lists their .458 barrel at .450 land diameter. I never slugged the barrel on my 1 x 18 McSavage but it shoots the 200 XTP's MOA to 200 yds with the HB sabots although it is fussy about the load. I attributed the fussiness to the fast twist on the Savage. I never heard about the loose bore until now. The barrel has been ordered in 1 x 22 from McGowan. If it is loose I may have to knurl the bullets. I'll slug the barrel when I get it.
