I must be the only owner of a Savage ML who does not want to shoot a bear or a deer at 300 yards. Is there anyone who shoots the rifle for fun? An afternoon at the range, paper targets at 100 yards with grandsons, going home with out pain from "kick back" as the boys say and nothing to clean. I am looking for loads in the 15/1800 fps range with bullets no heavier than 250 grs.
There is no 5477 in my area. There must be some reader of this thread that does not shoot the Savage with .458 WinMag loads.
I am desperate. Plenty of Hunting Loads, none for "can busting."
Thanks eleyxring

36gr of Vihtavuori N110 and a 250gr XTP is a cream puff load in the MLII. Still faster than 1800fps but recoil is next to nothing in a MLII. Drop down to a Hornady 225gr FTX or 230gr HAP for even lighter recoil.

What about 25-30 gr load of V110 or 4759. I have an 8# keg of 4759. Blue dot has show up in a 15-17 gr charge.. These are loads I have found on this web site. It seems that both 4759 and V110 are the same gr weight. Another load was 31 4759/V110.
Thanks for your reply. I have been feeling alone looking for slow loads for my Savage.
I have Hornady 185, 200 and 230 .451 bullets available from Academy at $25.00/100. They are FMJ for the .45ACP. Just fine for killing paper.

4759 should work but it makes less peak pressure than N110. It might take a bit more than N110 but if its just for range fun then try it. I think if you go down much more the peak will be super low. Try 36gr and the 230gr bullet. It should be a cream puff to shoot. Use a good tight sabot. Probably the MMP short black (Savage Recommended) since that bullet is very short.

Drop down to a Hornady 225gr FTX or 230gr HAP for even lighter recoil. Hodgdon is a reputable reloading powder manufacturer, and their website offers free reloading data for various calibers, including the .458 Win Mag. While they might not have a specific category for "can busting," you can focus on target loads. Look for loads with a target velocity in the 1500-1800 fps range and bullets around 250 grains.
