try shooting in overcast conditions not in direct sunlight without the diffusers, also a tip to pass along,on your metal rods, put some white electrical tape approx 1'' from top on each rod,(this is where i align my crosshair to)on guns use the narrower hole options, archery the wider hole selections, this will help in a square alignment to get the projectile over both sensors,i use 10ft but sometimes go to 25ft& 78ft for my 1,000yd work, hope this helps!

The unit reads err 1 on turning it on, even in the house. I looked at the instructions and will proceed from there but any others that have experienced that and cures?

On mine that means there is a problem with the front sensor. You might want to try cleaning the sensor lens with a good optics cloth and lens cleaner.

It was sitting in the barn for awhile so it could have dirt/dust on it.

I cleaned it, it now reads AL and flashes on each side of that and at times will back to err 1.
