Hi everyone! My name is Jim and I'm from Oregon. We live near the North Umpqua River, well known for it's steelhead fishing. I post on various hunting forums under the name Umpqua or Umpqua Hunter (UH).
I am a father of six, grandfather of 3. My wife an I enjoy hunting together and apply or build preference points in the best western hunting states every year, with the goal of drawing a couple high quality tags. We have been blessed with some awesome experiences. Researching how to draw quality tags in the west has been one of my favorite hobbies over the past 30+ years.
I signed up because this seems to be one of the best forums I have seen regarding muzzleloader questions and I am in need of some solid advice. In the near future, we are hoping to hunt elk in Arizona with a muzzleloader. I have a project to build a custom muzzleloader to optimized for hunting in Arizona, Utah and New Mexico where variable power scopes and Blackhorn 209 is allowed. I have muzzleloader hunted in Oregon (cap and conical bullet) for 30+ years.
Thank you!

Hi Jim, welcome to Doug's. I put a SML together for a friend who hunted in AZ. It shoots well with a full charge of BH209 and a 300 grain Scorpion. A very good contact, on this board, is Bestill. He is a great guy for info on BH 209. Good luck with your tags!

Great referral Yule. Met Bestill the first day on the forum. We've since spent hours on the phone. Last night I placed an order with him to do the barrel/breech plug/muzzle break work on my new muzzy!

Thanks, I think so too. He's obviously very knowledgeable and also patiently worked with me through a pile of questions.
