I wonder what the story is behind that?
Reminds me of basic training at Ft Benning. We were sharing one of the rifle ranges with another company. One of the other units guys had his target fall down and he just turned around with a loaded M-16. This drill sargent ran over and slapped the muzzle down and when he did the rifle discharged shooting the drill sargent right in the foot. After hearing all the talk about "tumble spin" bullets we were expecting the DS's foot to be blowed off. A nice neat hole in and a nice neat hole out with very little blood. The DS was very lucky, he was back on duty a couple of weeks later. Even had the shoe shop put a little patch over the bullet hole in his Corcorans along with new soles. The other drill sargents ribbed him bad, gave him "the order of the lavender heart", this medal they made with a lavender ribbon and the medal part had this foot with a bandaid on it.

When I first saw this, some additional pictures and a story was that he was shooting clay targets (looked like a home version of sporting clays). He was supposedly leaning on his loaded shotgun.
I don't think caliber or gage matters. Poor range safety is poor range safety, even with an air rifle.

Playing a shotgun "gun game" I can see what happened. It is common for shotgunners to rest the barrel on their toes when waiting to go to the line. They even make these leather pads, with sometimes a nub to to go into the barrel, that attaches to your shoes. I think they are called toe guards. I was always told you do not do it with a loaded gun. Basic gun safety, never point a loaded weapon at any part of your body.

When I first got this some time ago, the article said it was a 20 Ga. and yes he had rested it on his foot with a round in the chamber.
