I just picked up a new to me Stainless 700ML in .45 that is in great condition. I have had the same gun in .50 since they came out and I dearly love it and have killed several deer with it. I bought this .45 thinking I might use it as a donor rifle to convert to smokeless, and then realized that is out of my budget for the foreseeable future. That left me with two options. 1, shoot it as a .45 blackpowder, or 2, sell it to someone else.
I have found that it has a problem. Almost every time I have to pull the trigger allowing the firing mechanism to work but the cap not to pop, and then do it a second time when the cap will go off. It happens with several different nipples, both musket cap and #11. What is likely causing this? Whether I shoot it or sell it, it needs to be corrected.

Try cleaning the bolt and re-lubricate it.
Here's a field stripping video.......

If cleaning don't work put a new firing pin spring in for around $6.00 + ship. there none for week springs luke can fix you up with one.

The two previous replies should fix your problem. These bolts get a lot of dirt and corrosion inside the mainspring. When you disassemble it you will see why it doesn't fire well.

Bernie, welcome. you are at the right place to upgrade your smokers or go full SML. Lots of helpful guys here.
You can do a conversion to use BH209 pretty easily = Hunter bolt nose kit and have the factory barrel fitted with a breech plug (lukes or Savage) to use 209 primers. Quite a few of the smiths here on this board can do this work. Lots less than a full SML upfit and results are great. I have 2 remmy 700ML with this upgrade. both are SS45, one was 45 originally and another was a 50 and I got a 45 takeoff and put it on. great shooting guns. Send me a PM and I'll give more info if you want.
Again welcome, Best, 10 ga

Even cheaper, you can also call Hunter and have him send you a breechplug along with your bolt nose kit. If you tell him you want to go with a smokeless bolt nose kit (the smokeless nose is a tad longer) and a plug to fit the factory barrel he'll fix you right up. Even if he sends you a "smoker" plug all you have to do is trim a thread or two to fit the plug. His plug is well designed and like a cross between a Savage and a Remy, it even takes the Savage factory vent. That way down the line if you switch to a smokeless barrel your a "ready Freddie".
As 10ga said you can get pretty good accuracy with BH209 and if all your shots are under 200yds (one customer says he goes moa out to 300 but he is in a bedded laminate) you'll have no problems at all. Just don't try BH209 with the factory 209 set-up, tons of blowback and downright painful if you shoot it lefthanded. If you want to go out past 300yds it would be better if you go smokeless IMO

I shoot BH209 out of my smokeless axis build (hunting regs are BH209). I did build it around the idea of using bh209 (28" barrel to optimize the powder better). I have no issue with accuracy and except for velocity I see no difference in my groups (wind drift at long range but that is caused by lower velocity). I am not sure what the max load/velocity for the 700ml .45 barrel would be, but worth starting with that route if you cannot afford a full conversion with smokeless barrel.
You can convert it bh209 then one day upgrade the barrel.
My initial testing with bh209 put a 3 shoot group of 3" at 421yd which is completely acceptable for hunting. Wind is what really comes into play at slower velocities. I started with Parker 270 emax but just got some Bombs test that should be better on game and extra weight will help a lot in the wind.

I bought one that rhe guy clained the same problem. I found that he had dry fired it to many times and the nipple was swollen😉 so the cap would fit tight, but wasnt bottomed out. After a couple wacks of the bolt it would fire. .But it is a different system now. No more nipples.
