I have one of the plugs that Luke sold that had the shim in it. The shim that was in my plug in .090 long x .241 diameter and is .175" from the face to the rim of the primer pocket. Mark, that's in the Savage plugs I had modified. We only need about 0.045 worth of shims in the Arrowhead Plug for the Savage bolt heads. For the Hunter and CMC bolt, there's no shim needed if you have the ability to headspace. Otherwise, it's usually 0.005 to 0.015 worth of shims in those guns with a prefit barrel.

You can also get those shims from Mcmastercarr, they are a bit cheaper than the link give as well. I just orders some yesterday to play with my Remington. What is the best way to test how much shim you need? I don't see a great way to measure...

OK, I thought you might have had them machined so they could use the same style shim.

Unfortunately, you can not take the measurements required to calculate the desired shim thickness. I Loctite my shim(s) in place. They carbon up after that from use. You do not want too much of a crush fit on the Primer as it wears on the Retaining Screw on the Remingtons requiring you to re-shim. I strive for .002" of crush on the Primer. I have found Federal 209A Primers to work the best for this as they crush with less force than the Winchester 209.

Great video Luke but your gun elevation looks like your shooting satellites. Lol

Trial and error. Unfortunately, you can not take the measurements required to calculate the desired shim thickness. SNIP. You might be able to loosen the BP until you get the correct fit, then carefully note how much of a revolution it takes to seat the BP. I don't know the thread pitch, but if there are 16 threads per inch then for every 30 degrees you turn the BP it moves 0.005 30 degrees is equal to five minutes on a clock face so just think of your wrench as the hand on a clock edge.

Ok, this explains things. When I got my gun from Cole, I could not hardly close the the apex break open because of primer tightness, but had no misfires first 10 shot range session. I probably opened up the primer pocket a little too much (my fault) to allow Cci magnum to go in pocket. That caused the blowback and vent liner comtamination. Luke can you give me an order no. And price so I can order some shims. Just wondering if Luke and Cole could get together and develop a grinding bit sized for different primers such as one for a Winchester 209, one for cci magnum. With the width being correct all us guys which are not machinist would only have to worry about depth. Thinking about a primer having to overcome 25,000 to 45,000 psi makes me realize the fit probably has to be perfect unless you duplex.

Got my shims from Luke today. After about 45 min of finding the correct fit for my savage plug I was able to get 100% seal or close to it with fed 209a primers. Thanks luke. ?
