The farm i hunt on has gone all copper on bullets in our muzzleloaders. We can only humt wih archery and mzldr anyway. We all shoot the savage but have the typical consistency problem you get with them and it way worse with barnes than parker bullets So i am looking to either convert or buy a built rifle with no 209 primers or sabots needed. If indo the conversion with pac nor or mcgowen barrel can i or will i need to swage bullets to fit into a 45 cal barrel? I did do a search but was unable to find out the info i am looking for, so apologies for asking something that everybody else probably already knows. Would likento look into converting before soending 3500 on a build. Thisnis a treestand weapon predominately so indo not need to be able to shoot 400 yds Thanks Brent

Are you not able to use 209 primers because of state law?

No, they are legal. Just trying to eliminate a weak point in the system. I still feel sabot is weakest part of the entire thing and that is what i truly want to get rid of

Cheapest route, get a break open 45/70 and have it converted to smokeless. Buy a sizing die and press....start killin' deer.

I'd get a 45 McGowen fitted for your Savages and not worry about the 209. If your really concerned I'd talk to Luke at arrowhead sporting goods about his new breech plug and he'll have you running in no time.
The 209 isn't as bad as some people make it to be. Yes there might be better systems out there but it's been used for a long time with proven results.
Best thing to do is talk to Luke he'll be your best bet at figuring your concerns out. Don't let the 209/system scare you.
Good luck!

Maybe I'm an anomaly, but I've been using the 209 and sabots since around 2000 or so and have had 0 problems. First with the ML-I and modules, then to the ML-II. I switched to a .45 Pac-Nor a few years ago on my ML-II and push the Barnes .40 cal 195g at 2850 fps using straight H-4198 with no problems. I use the CCI 209M primer.

I'll assume you've checked all the normal recommendations when setting up your savage.
That said, since you aren't looking for long distance I would recommend you request a sample pack of the all copper Thor bullets. 250 pr 300gr, whichever you prefer. Find the size that fits your bore best and order some. Chances are it will take more than the .500 to fit your savage bore. Knurl the bearing area up a bit (all sizes are .499, only the skirts are differently sized) to improve accuracy potential, use a good quality single like N110, and be done. Doesn't get much cheaper or easier.

If you go the Thor route my NULA liked 38-39gn of N110 with that bullet.

My SMI douglas .50 loved 42 gr N110 with the 250gr. Point and shoot and lay anything to waste in it's path to 200 yds. Need more, just aim a bit higher.
