I have a lead on a 700 Ultimate take off barrel. My 700ML currently has a 209 primer kit. I took a peak at an Ultimate action and see that the bolt uses the same lockup as Rem. 700 centerfires. My 700 ML bolt is nothing like that. What all is involved to swap an Ultimate barrel to the 700ML? Just trying to decide if this is a worthwhile venture? Thanks!

The ultimate barrel won't work on the old style ML's.. Unless of corse you put a lot of work into it..
You would be far ahead with time and money to replace your barrel with a new custom barrel..
Just my thoughts...

That is what a quick look at an Ultimate looked like. Who are some of the more experienced manufactures of custom barrel for a 700 ML? Thanks.

Do you want a 50 or 45 caliber..?
There are several good barrel makers. Once you decide on it, get it ordered., then pick out a good rifle smith and have it installed..
If you go with a 45 you will be able to shoot sabotless with higher velocities and extreme accuracy.

Then order a barrel from Brux., Krieger, or one of the many other barrel makers.. Depending on who you order it from as to how long it takes to get..
You might get lucky and find one in stock somewhere..
Order it as a .450-458 with a 1-20 twist..

Luke's sitting on a bunch of Brux barrels. You can get one from him ready to install, already for the breechplug of your choice. Basically "plug-n-play". You take a blank to a smith that has never done one it could turn out bad. I have one coming in that was worked over by a supposedly reputable smith that thought the way to fix the headspacing was to cut the bolt down.

That is unbelievable. Of course the repair story will make for some good info. Rossman and the rest of you guys have such insightful information and stories. Just when you think you've heard it all!

Some guys get a good reputation for doing a certain thing, but they refuse to own up to the fact that they don't know EVERYTHING. That is the guys that you have to clean up after.
