I am thinking of getting either a 6.5 Creedmor or .243 for my daughter to use for deer. With deer effective bullets in the same weight rifle would the recoil be significantly different between the two? She does not care much for recoil but shoots a .45 caliber muzzleloader with 200 grain bullets without real complaint. Also the harder question, any preference in the cartridges. I only lean to the .243 as ammo is more available it seems.

Strictly speaking, yes, there is a difference but we are talking about for guys who are shooting fast and self correcting in a practical match so need to spot hits and misses. As far as discomfort from recoil both are mild. Either will kill deer dead so pick what you can get ammo for if you don't load your own.

Don't know anything to compare recoil bit if you not going to reload go look at a local gun store and compare ammo prices. This was how I ended up choosing my rifle because the price was better with 243.
With that said the 6.5 creedmor is still very temping!
Good luck

I would have to agree with 78rr. You could probly get .243 in any mom&pop store that sells ammo plus a lot wider variety of off-the -shelf factory ammo loaded with premium hunting bullets. If you reloaded and blasted targets year round then the 6.5 Creedmoor might be a better. But with the 6.5 Creedmoor your at the mercy of Steve Hornady. Another option would be a .260 Rem (6.5-08) which is my favorite in the 6.5 class but Steve is managing the 6.5 Creedmoor better then Remington did the 260.

Jim I have been killing the heck out of deer for the past several summers during deer depredation season here with a youth model Savage 10 in .243. Bullet weights ranging from the 80 grn GMX up to 100 grn lead projectiles. I am totally sold on the 80 grn GMX as the recoil is very mild and it is very accurate and DEADLY and more importantly they are DRT. Everything about the .243 is cheaper.....it gets my vote over the 6.5.....

I chose 6.5 creed over the .260 because I'm shooting it from an AR platform and when reloading I can load the rounds out further than I could in a .260 and still fit and feed from a magazine

If all you do is hunt and you aren't a rifle loony, then .243 Win is the obvious choice. There are advantages to the 6.5 Creed but not everyone will benefit from them; .260 Rem is really limited in an auto and doesn't offer some advantages of the Creed in a bolt.
As for recoil it is negligible and a Creed can actually create less recoil with equal bullet weights (if we really want to be technical about it).

Two Krieger 6.5 barrels (1-8 twist, 5R, Medium Palma) just shipped along with 200 pieces of brass for the 6.5 Creed. My reamer should be shipping shortly and I'm going to have them barreled up by mid July. The bolts are out for fluting and knobs as well. Manners says my stock will ship in July also. I should have it all up for a PRS match the first week of August.

That's an awesome to see new toys when you get home! Do you like Hornady cases? I have a mixture of 243 and read you should really use the same sizes figured I start with what I have and slowly faze mine out with only one brand. Read good stuff about Hornady cases just thought I'd ask.

Honestly, I have never used Hornady cases. I bought these because they are the only reasonably priced 6.5 Creed cases around and I don't have the time to trim, form, and ream .243 Win cases right now although I will eventually for match use since they get left behind most of the time. I also have several hundred Hornady .308 Win cases sitting around that I need to get loaded up after I wear out the Winchester brand cases I am using right now.
