White is single density Yellow is double Pink is triple, usually used on larger diameter pipes Green is certified oil free for certain gases like oxygen and lab connections (also used for water lines in some European countries) Gray does contain nickle but is not for high temp. Mainly for anti-seizing, anti-gailling and anti-corrosion, on stainless pipes and fittings Copper colored contains copper mainly for lubrication There is a new line of gray pipe tape that is just double density
3 times is how many times I was taught to wrap a fitting or pipe.
If you want to pass your building inspection in some places in the US, don't use white tape on a gas line. If it ain't yellow you have already failed.

The stainless steel tape is specifically designed for stainless steel fittings; PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) has been impregnated with nickel powder. This material acts like a bearing plate and helps to minimize galling and seizing from metal to metal contact. Recommended primarily for SST threads, but is also compatible with galvanized steel, iron, brass, copper, aluminum and various plastics. It is particularly useful in high pressure applications where high torque is used on small fittings. Effective to 500°F / 260°C
