I lost my Savage ML10 II in a house fire about 3 years ago. It was an SS ML10, third pillared, bedded on a Stockade Mule Deer composite stock, with Warne QD rings holding a Vortex Viper. It shot better than my other center-fires and I sure do miss her.
Anyhow, shortly after the fire I obtained and H&R 45-70. Slufoot exercised his talents on this rifle and it has been transformed into my .45 smokeless. I miss shooting a .50 smokeless and have considered having this H&R also fitted with an SMI 50.
I'm looking for opinions, input and reviews on the SMI.
Thanks guys!

Just from the quality standpoint I would recommend a different route. I haven't seen acceptable work that has left there in recent times. I think they use to be reputable but newer stuff has suffered.

Having personal experience with SMI I could not and would not recommend them.

Might be a better route to try to find a 500 S&W Handirifle and go the Slufoot route with that if your set on a .50 Handirifle SML. The only drawback is that the 500 S&W would have a groove just under .500 so it would be tighter then a Savage with it's like a .508 groove. You would probly be just about right using .451 bullets in a BCR or the Hornady "easy load" sabot.
With Remington stopping production of the Handirifle you still might be able to find a new one. We tried to find a .357 Mag on a SB-2 frame for the Granddaughter and didn't have any luck. Did find a NIB 45-70 so the son jumped on it. I think he did say he ran across a .500 S&W while he was out looking.

You could always get a Savage or Stevens short action. Then you could get a barrel and Savage bolt head and breech plug in a 50 or 45 or what ever you want. I have a Stevens 45 McGowan that shoots the .451 290gr TEZ Barnes sabot less that my son has killed deer with. It is the only gun he will deer hunt with anymore. I think the bolt action is a better way to go than a break action. It would have more options for barrels easier scope mounting and be a solid start and it has a solid stock too.

What is it you miss about a .50? Most of us prefer the .45. Maybe you should get a bullet die and start shooting sabotless, or build a .416! Building a .50 would be one of the last things on most peoples' list.
