Looks like I will be building a 357 Maximum Handi-rifle for the granddaughter. Found a .357 Mag on a SB2 frame but would like SS but I don't know if the ever offered a .357 Mag in SS.
One guy local has a 357 Max and is getting 2700fps with the 140gr SST. Don't know how wild I'll push it for the 10yr old.
Probly be going into a ATI stock, the one with the pistol grip and AR style collapsible stock.
Was supposed to build two .375 Win on Remy 788s but one guy may back out since Ohio may add the .450 Marlin to the approved cartridge list for deer hunting.

I have been collecting 788 parts. I have most of a 788 30-30 the barrel is junk. Im going to build a .357 max on it.

You can go with the .375 Win and use the 30-30 mags and not have to alter the bolt/extractor. Do not let published data fool you, since most loads use a flat nose bullet because it is mainly a lever gun round. Couple of guys are using them in Encores say they are getting close to 2400fps with 250gr spire points IIRC. Doubt if you could get anymore speed due to lack of case capacity.

I have a few threads about my 357max Encore on here. This year I tried the 140ftx just to see what it would do. My chamber is throated extra long for seating a 180ssp and 200ftx as far out as possible to gain powder space. I seat all bullets only .125 into the case, and then get in as much as 32gr AA1680 or 31gr H110. These loads are WAY over book numbers, BUT, do not show any pressure signs because of increased case capacity. The website 357MAXIMUM.com tells of this and how pressure data was obtained. The tester said you can't even get enough powder in the limited case capacity to cause a problem. Nonetheless, it is an absolute hammer on deer. So far have used 200ftx, 180ssp, 180xtp, 158flat point, and 140ftx. Last season, my one god son killed a medium doe at 50yds with a boiler room shot, and I killed two big does with neck shots at 25 and 100yd with the 140ftx and 31gr H110. The boiler room shot exited but came apart in a heap, deer went 30-40yds. The two neck shots hit direct spine and both bullets disappeared into powder. Fine with me because that bullet shoots unbelievably accurate. Many one inch groups at 200yds have been fired with this load now, and trajectory is flat. Two inches high at 100yd and about an inch low at 200yd. It does not disappoint. The brass can be hard to come by sometimes, so I have built up a decent stash when I find it. Have a couple hundred new cases, and been on same used ones for over 7yrs, with some having 25 loadings on them and not even a single loose primer pocket yet. Indiana is talking about going to high powers this year, but the old max will remain a potent woods gun and plinker for us.

Sounds like if you could get 2700 fps with a 140 gr bullet that the 140 Barnes XPB would be delightful if it shot well
