Something I've always planned to try but never got around to. I am thinking running a .451-2 class bullet through, turn it a bit, then run it through again, repeat until it loads properly and the shank appears smooth. I plan to try this with some 275 BEs I have to see how they compare accuracy wise to the FF 310 APBs.
Anyone have any luck with this? I'd love to hear about your experience.
Thanks.

Smooth formed work fine but doing this sounds like a hassle IMO.

gar, did you mean smooth forming worked fine with a ff die?
I know it may be a hassle but FF is what I have to work with.
The BE shoots SO good due to it's thinner skin, I want to see how close I am in accuracy potential with my FFing.

I did this several years ago and absolutely no accuracy gain with all the Parkers, not sure about a .452 worth a try, might give Blackhorn shooters some help. Ray

My brux is .450 land to land so tried ff every bullet i could and they shot well but they never came closer to accuracy of smooth form bullets. Even310 ff shot well but for precision accuracy nothing compares to groups obtained by parker ballistic extreme or 270 emax smooth form sized loose.

I guess it is worth a try to make land riders this way and see if there is a gain in accuracy over full forming some other bullet. I just think it would be worth your while to have a smooth form die.

The thinner jacket on those two bullets definitely makes them shooters are SML pressures. I'd bet the same jacket on a FF 310 APB would shoot lights out as well. But what you gain in accuracy you give up in potential terminal performance if you push them really hard. I'd still love to see them in a bonded version. May be the perfect bullet.

why not just size it real loose full and then see if it swells up since the gap aint really that big where the rifling was cut to the bullet

Mike,
Good to see you thinking and trying new things. I am out of commission right now but thinking about your post. As far as running through the dye three passes should accomplish this, but I keep picturing a balloon where with my hands try to compress it but it keeps popping out where it is not contained. So with a Full Form dye you have either 6 or 8 lands compressing the bullet and 6 or 8 grooves not compressing the bullet. I am not sure if the bullet will remain perfectly circular like with a smooth dye after this sizing exercise. You may have run the bullet through 6 or 9 more times to get it as close to perfectly circular as you can which is not that hard to do.
With that siad I would still like to get around to try this if I could get my hands on some Clay's powder for a booster.
I may play around with a bullet in the garage just to see what it comes out looking like.

I tested this ideal extensively and have yet to find any thing that compares to thin jacket parker smooth sized loose.keep us posted like to see your results.

Range ball, What load you shooting? Currently 70gr of H4198 with the 310 APB FFd. I do plan to try this with some 275 BEs I have here, just no idea when.

I plan to give it a whirl, but like I said above, no idea when I'll be able to get to it. Easy to post ideas, hard to find time to put them into action

I'm only talking about taking them down by .002. Also, way back when edge shot some of his best groups (iirc) with egg shaped parkers, I believe, so I'm not too worried about perfect concentrically.
