Myers on the board has been kind enough to lend Guy and myself a .375 to tinker with until our builds are completed later this year. He has his nose to the grindstone and no time to play. This barrel has a chamber so our first go round was a bust pretty much. Guy weighed the powder but I had the "dummy chamber" at my house, so all but one load was too small when we checked the loads before we left for the range. The one load we could test was 63gr IMR 3031. Timed 2708-2709-2697fps @ 36* with a .375 235gr Speer Hot Cor. Accuracy was poor, vertically strung 2.5" group. Today I got to play a little. Bumped the charge up to 64gr IMR 3031 with the same 235gr Speer Hot Cor. Velocity was, 2730-2762-2745fps @ 8*, with wind chill -8*. Too cold for this guy!! The first shot was cold fouled bore, no warm up foulers. Many times I have seen loads go to the recycle bin when the temps drop below 20*. The ES opens up and accuracy and velocity go south. Velocity went up slightly with the charge increase like it should have even in these very cold temps. That is encouraging to me, leading me to believe this may be a temp stable powder with light for caliber bullets. Only time and testing will tell for certain. Accuracy was not the greatest, but Myers believes this twist is more suited to longer, heavier bullets. He feels a 14 or 15" twist would better suit these short bullets. I also tried 65gr IMR 3031 with these bullets but the group opened up again. Have to see if 64gr is repeatable for accuracy. I tried a slower powder with some Sierra 300gr SBT Gamekings. The chrony quit working so no data was collected but I will include the group. .375 Rem-Pac 1:12" twist 5 groove Full Formed bullets No Wads Fed 209A .040 Bushing OEM PFC The top group is with the un-named load and 300gr Sierra SBT, .665" @ 100yds. The bottom group is with 64gr IMR 3031 and the 235 Speer Hot Cor, .915" @ 100yds. TG has some 3031 traces for the .375 in the trace section if anyone is interested.

Under MOA isn't too shabby for freezing your giblets off and your first time pulling the trigger on someone else's rifle Thanks for sharing, you already have more shots fired than I did in the 5 months I had it in the safe. Maybe next outting you'll try that retumbo charge I've been pleading for?

Good shooting and great info on 3031 powder. 3031 may be a good choice for a booster with the slower powders in the .375. In my testing 4759 has been to unpredictable for a booster. I have tried 4759 5g and 7g with not much difference in speed, then tried 10g and speed jumped up 300fps. this was using 4350 as main powder.
I also think the 12 twist maybe to fast for the light bullets. I haven't tried anything heavier than 250g so I dont know for sure. When my new barrel gets done I'll have a better idea on twist rate.

Good shooting in those conditions Dave and for this early in the game with the .375, That's looking up from where we started for sure. Cole, I will try your T-Rex loads next time out. We have a good bit more of testing to do with powders and bullets, hopefully we can find some good and reliable cold weather loads. Pretty impressive so far, as far as ignition is concerned, somewhat slower powders and 0 misfires, while using an OEM .040 bushing plug. Again, cudos for shooting in this weather.

Nice shooting ! Too much snow on the ground to even think about getting to the range in this neck of the woods . Chris

It appears there are a few .375s out there. It will be interesting to see how they compare/differ and what turns out to be the "ideal" load combo.

Myers129
Do you have these 375 SPML barrels or would I have to order one from somewhere?

Welcome spml, Cole may be able to hook you up with a .375 barrel, or order you one if he doesn't have exactly what you're looking for.

Little more data picked up today, temp was 30*. .375 Rem-Pac 1:12" twist 5 groove Full Formed bullets No Wads Fed 209A .040 Bushing OEM PFC 300gr Sierra SBT Nothing spectacular, if the wind and ES had been more kind, would have been a little better. This is a very old lot of powder, price was $12.40 a pound back whenever it was bought.

Thanks for doing the testing for me Dave, I thought ohioguy was gonna help too but he must be busy. Indeed starting out under MOA with a fast twist barrel is very impressive on all accounts. Glad to see you are shooting that well before any duplexing is tested to see if it's even needed anymore.
Thanks for testing the retumbo for me, now that we know it will ignite I know we will get the primer balance figured out and it will be a cakewalk after that.

He must of forgot to call... looks like I'll have to sneak down there and take the gun if I want to shoot it any more... All kidding aside, good shooting Dave, sure is interesting testing the 375 and results are pretty good already. Looks promising for the future.

For those inquiring minds wondering about pressures in this load range for 375cal: 40X) K375 BlueDot/H1000 4/95gr 300gr .375cal tsx Full Form no wad 2/23/15 28in bbl. (Burn rate of H1000 is close to IMR7828) The load shown in the trace above seemed safe in this barrel under conditions present at the time of the test, but may not be under other conditions. TG
