Guys
Been wanting to do a custom (centerfire)gun for a couple years yet couldn't justify the $$ when no rifle hunting in IA. Then i found this sight! wow! This is right up my alley with building a custom gun with a muzzy that i can use. Looking for opinions on my first build. here's my idea:
remington action(i have a ss) brux barrel (1/20) (length not sure?) planning on swinglock Not sure about stock just yet (thinking boyds tacticool/ choate tactical/ ??ideas/ do i spend the $ and go with a BC?) muzzle break(need help here!)
Hoping to have luke at smokelessmz do the build.
Any input or pros/cons would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome Charlie. Pages and pages of threads. search engine for whatever... Go through them and post any questions. You are kinda open ended on your thread. Rem action, brux barrel, stock of choice?? Then what kind of breech plug to use??? Savage with 209 or a Hankins using LRMP or something else. And you gonna go with sabotless or saboted? And do you need to shoot 50 as per regulations or can you go 45? And swinglok what, die??? and is this primarily a hunting gun, and where and how do you hunt? There is a big difference between a 20" barrel 50 and a 28" barrel 45, each has strong and weak points and their uses. More info better than less.
Personally I'd go with a ...
Geez I'm an addict and have 5 SML so I have about 1 of whatever and looking for more.

If Luke's doing the build more than likely it will be a 45 cal with a savage plug and tungsten bushing with at least a Swinglock smooth form. I suggest getting the dual smooth/full form die and cover all the options. JMO.....
I have a friend up in Iowa who has a bad bull. The deer in Iowa are mutants.

I'm stuck on the stock....not sure the route I should take. Also muzzle break? If your going to shoot 275 grain bullets or lighter a break isn't needed unless your recoil shy. If your going to be shooting 300 grain or heavier probably be a good idea. If your only going to be hunting with the rifle and not running out and shooting competitions with the ml a Brux or Krieger barrel isn't needed. The McGowen and Pacnor barrels will shoot moa or better all day long. This way you can save the money for more bullets, powder, or sizing die.

I'm stuck on the stock....not sure the route I should take. Also muzzle break? If you're gonna shoot HOT and are the least bit recoil or muzzle blast sensitive then a brake is due. Helps with the "hard hold" too. Longest shot I've had in the last 5 years is 127 yards, so I'm not really doing the looonnng range thing. Around here it's THICK and most shots are close. Like outside of the 127 yard shot in a bean field the next longest is 55 yards, and that covers 40 kills. So whatever you have to deal with suit your style! As for stocks I've always been fascinated by the ones with an adjustable length. Longer stock for warm weather and LESS jacket/shirt/duofold/etc... and shorter for the cold days for more coats/flannels/underarmour/woolies for warmth and need a shorter stock. Check out the hillbill pics and see the guns with adjustable stocks, neat stuff. Luke can fix you up. You'll end up an addict if you don't get away now. LOL Good building, that is the fun part, then load development. and then hunting with your own custom rifle! Best, 10 ga

Best advice I can offer is research....research....and more research.... Then more research. Opinions are just that opinions. Base your selections on facts. Everyone here love's their own set ups. Some of us multiple set ups and each for their own reason are loved. As stated 1probanly won't be enough...never seem's that way for sure. There are different ignition systems out there and new ones developing all the time. So research heavily in this area. My next barrel has been ordered extra long (on both ends) just in case I don't like the ignition system I go with. It will leave me room for a change and still a long barrel lug out front....and room for re-crowns on the front..... Yea I know it sounds like I can't make up my mind. But I can attest that their have been MANY improvements since my first Savage MLII 5 years ago. So sit back relax and research. Call some of these guys and have a nice visit and learn. And by ALL means if at all possible make the Hankins rifle shoot in May . There will be so much knowledge there to learn . If you wish PM. Me and I will share my number with you. And you can give me a call . Good Luck and Safe shooting Drop
