Am thinking about purchasing a Savage Axis in 25-06 to use as a long range deer rifle out to (400-500) yards or so. I would set it up with a EGW rail and Burris Signature rings. I like Leupold scopes but am unsure how much magnification I need. I was thinking a 3X9 would be enough. My shots will be taken from a box blind with a good rest and I will work up some good reloads. Any opinions, advice, comments are welcome. So what do you think of this set up?

I might also suggest the Ruger Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor. I am really a big fan of this round. Recoil is very low with 140 grain bullets and 6.5 bullets have a very high B.C. As far as the scope, the 3x9 might not be enough at those ranges. The Burris Signature Zee rings are all I use on my guns.
I wish Savage offered the Axis in 6.5 Creedmoor. Anyway good luck with your decision. Buying a new gun is always a good thing.

Have used a Remington .25-06 Sendero with a Leupold 4.5-14 x 50 shooting handloads of Nosler Balistic Tips and Partitions . Hunted out of a box blind in North Carolina shooting small coastal whitetails ... at least the ones I shoot are small ! Never shot one much past 300 hundred ( lazer rangefinder ) and of over 25 or so never lost one . However , for 400 yards or more and any bigger size deer I think the .25-06 is just a little under gunned . I still hunt with my .25-06 but for for 300 yard and under conditions preferably 275 and under . With Murphy's Law always on my mind , after shooting the .25-06 for about 3 years I got a Remington Sendero in 7MM Rem. Ultra Mag and put a 4.5-14 x 50 on it . Handloaded some Balistic Tips and Patitions as fast as accuracy would allow and shot a few in the 375 yard range . Off the bench in good light with no pressure shooting at long range is one thing . End of the day bad light, a little breeze , a little rushed to find the deer in the scope ... to me 300 yards is still a pretty long shot to take on a deer .JMO The two bucks in the avitar picture were taken with the .25-06 . The 4 point in the back 175 yards . The 8 point 85 yards . Chris

I agree that 300 yards is a long poke under field conditions. I can shoot up to 450 yards or more but would rather take a closer shot. I will take another look at the energy figures maybe I need to rethink this.

to me the 2506 has plenty of power for 500y. factory load for my 243 keeps over 1000lbs to 400y using a 100g btsp sierra bullet

As Chris stated long range from the bench does not translate the same in field conditions. I do depredation control hunts and not to brag but I kill a lot of deer every year. I impose a 300 yd limit on shots because frankly thats all I feel comfortable with and the conditions must be right for that. I have been packing a Savage 110 chambered in .243 as it is a light quick handling package.
