I have never been around the Rossi but I have a New England Arms .22 Hornet. I had a 4X scope on it for years. I just put a 3X9 with an illuminated reticle on this spring. It has what I would call a medium weight barrel. It's very capable of MOA groups. I did have a bad experience when I sent the receiver in to be re-barreled. 161 dougsmessageboards.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=modern&action=display&thread=1206

The main thing with the break open type action is the barrel to receiver fit and lock-up. Your scope/sights are mounted on the barrel but how recoil effects the barrel to receiver fit is the key. With low recoil rounds like rimfires or low recoil .22 centerfires you should not have much of a problem. You just may not have the consistency of lock-up/fit to match the accuracy of conventional actions.

I have shot both the New England (12ga heavy barrel, and 223 Rem) and the Rossi (22lr, 20ga, 243). I just bought a Rossi youth 243 for my youngest to practice on. I could not get the darn thing to group less than 8-12inches at 100yards. I did a lot of reading and found an article about the twist rate in the Rossi being to slow to stabilize a 100grain bullet (your standard off-the-shelf round). After reloading some 85grain Sierra Gamekings the group shrank down to sub-MOA. One concern is they all seem to be sensitive to different forearm screw tension. It is fine for plinking and 100 yard shots, but if I had it to do all over again…I would lay down an extra $150.00 and just get a bolt action (he is a lefty, and I thought the single shot would be the best choice). The 22lr seem to be accurate enough for squirrel hunting, and pop can shooting, but again, an old pawnshop 22 bolt just seems better to me.
