Merry Christmas everyone! The wrapping paper has already flown and dinner is well underway! I've had a great hunting season and have bagged my share of deer. Waterfowl and varmints will be targeted for the next few weeks.
I'm thinking I need a new rifle project! I started with a stock .50 Savage SML then graduated to a Rem 700 custom .45 built by Fishhawk. I have had great luck with both. I have only fired XTPs, SSTs, and Barnes in sabots.
I think maybe I'd like to try a break-open gun, maybe T/C Contender or an H&R conversion. I don't know anything about these other than snippets I've read over the years. It might make a nice, lighter-weight compact SML that would work well in a treestand.
What are my options? Buy one of these rifles in .45-70 and have the barrel drilled for a breechplug or replace the barrel with a custom?
I'd even consider shooting a .40 sabotless...I'm guessing that would mean a custom barrel.
Any recommendations appreciated!

Here ya go: build one on a falling block action. Get yourself a Ruger #1 donor and mate a Brux 28" 1:20 barrel on it (heavy contour, caliber of your choice) then have a Savage style BP installed with a 040 tungsten bushing or a Hankins LRMP set up. Put a Weaver Grand Slam scope on it and let me know how it works for ya Happy New Year rambler

Rambler I like the falling block action I have been looking for one ..... I have a Ruger #1 in safe but not sure I want to donate a $1000 + rifle for a smokeless . If that were my choices I'd just grab a Hankins SML But if ur lookin for a break open Slipper, what I would do is get an encore frame , barrel choices are wide ranged , along with stock options . Then contact Jeff Hankins about his ignition system and barrel options , U wont be sorry

Jeff just completed a conversion of an Encore barrel for me. Bullberry put together the 1:22 twist SS 45-70 Pacnor barrel for me. It just shipped a couple of days ago. I'm hoping it arrives real soon for some teasing. Ohio's muzzleloader season opens in just over a week.
Its been a long process that started when I placed my order in early March with Bullberry.

Bullberry built the barrel and Jeff Hankins Custom Rifles threaded the barrel for his breach plug plus is providing me with his large rifle magnum primer module system. Since the barrel was made for a 45-70 the shell ejector was provided by Bullberry.
He has videos of this system on YouTube.

I just found a Lyman Special Edition Ruger No1 in .45-70 Govt in my LGS. It isn't terribly priced and would make for a nice conversion. It would fit with the whole retro thing.

as far as ultimate sex appeal the #1 would have to be it for me, with a custom barrel and some Teflon coating that would be one nice rig...

Hmmm, there is a Ruger #1 in .405 on Gunbroker now! Would the .40 caliber Hornady SSTs or the Barnes X fit in a .405 caliber barrel? If so, this might make a neat conversion!
I've already sent an email to Jeff Hankins!

Mr. Hankins is steering me toward the CVA Apex in .45-70 for an easy, affordable build. I like the looks of them too! I wish they came with a wood stock but the plastic should do fine. I might start looking for a used donor gun after the new year. We hunt all season with the ML as the VA county we hunt in is shotgun/ML only.

Hankins apex will be a great build. I would recommend having a break installed or put a 12 oz recoil suppressor in butt stock.

Being that its a break open gun and the ignition installer only recommends a max charge of 55gr IMR4198 the brake IMO is a waste of money as recoil is very mild with that charge and a 275gr sabotless bullet.

45omega Break and suppressor was only a suggestion. Imo a 8.5 lb gun pushing a 275 bullet at 2500 fps. Is not bad if you only shoot sparingly and hunting. But if you spend alot of time at the range. You will appreciate any recoil reduction. I had a cva apex conversion and at about40 shots in a day at range pretty sore shoulder.

Hankins apex will be a great build. I would recommend having a break installed or put a 12 oz recoil suppressor in butt stock. Mercury recoil reducers/suppressors do help. It is added weight but no extra loading hassles as those associated with the brakes.

I'm not sure he came out and actually suggested that load but Jeff Hankins had a video on a break open he did, I think it was with a buffalo classic, and that's what he was testing it with.

55 Grn IMR was a starting point and he commented on the rcoil shooting 250 grn bullets .......That H&R was mine the first one he ever did . And with 275 BE doesn't kick any more than my 7mmmag with 150's in a Ruger #1.

Slipper, You have been through the MLII and 700 build phase and a break action is intriguing isn't it. You're an addict same as most of the regulars here. Well you can make up your own mind and it will be a nice light and handy SML. Personally I had to sell 2 of my potential build donors as I set my eye on another special and they didn't fit the way I've chosen this trip. A few more $ in the cache and I'm sending a deposit off. And yes it will be another break action for me too. Already have an Encore conversion but going a full custom barrel this time. I'm wanting a little more barrel length and weight than I've got in the conversion. The current conversion is accurate, light, handy, easy carry, and did I say accurate. BUT, I'm an addict.... On to the next project. Fun isn't it. 10

Which factory break-open .45-70 barrel would be the best quality? I'd like to get the best barrel option if I go with a Hankins conversion.

Probably the best recognized break open that has been mentioned on this board is the CVA Apex 45/70 break open. I believe it has a Bergera barrel, 25" and 1:20 twist. But the new ones are mostly out of stock. You could always break out the bank roll and get a Ruger #1 falling block in 45/70 and have it coverted. Very expensive tho

Ck the local pawn shops or online auction sites for a used H&r 45/70 u can usually find them pretty reasonable , Cva 45/70 r hard to find on the shelf. In reference to a Ruger #1 that in my book would be a crime. Vk classifieds on graybeard out doors in H&R section i thought i saw one there. www.go2gbo.com/forums/hr-classifieds/wts-45-70-handi-rifle/
