Good afternoon all, aquired a 45/70 Handi rifle in the spring and going to work up a few loads for it. I have bought a few 365grain hardcast flatnose/ gas check bullets from Matt's bullets and looking at some R7 or H4198 loads. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Going to use Hornaday lever revolution ammo next week for now. Thanks, Bill

I've used 50.5g of RL7 with the 325 FTX. Good results

Well the Hornaday ammo did the trick yesterday, the range was very short, 30 yards. The buck mule-kicked and ran 70 yards before going down. Gutting it I found his heart was split in two. I'm surprised he went that far. Now I can take my time and develop a load for it.

You have had the same experience I have found with heart shot deer. They often run very hard from 35 to 60 yards and then pile up. One had a hole right through the heart and another about 1/3 of the heart was gone and they both did the run thing.

It might be tall tales but the old timer Maine hunters talk about big bucks getting their hearts blown in half and running a quarter mile before dropping.

With my 450m H&R ultra hunter I used 56gr of r7 with a 300gr jacketed bullet and if I remember right it was around 2400fps. I also used 48gr of ac5744 and a 300gr bullet which is a ruger load but its right at 40k and you should have no problem with that also.

Wow, I didn't realize they can handle the Ruger class loads but nice to know if I ever need them. I'm looking to get that cast bullet in the 1600-1700fps range, maybe starting @ 40g or so of R7. I don't have a cronagraph. (yet) Thanks for the input..

Don't shoot 50k or over Ruger loads but 42k or less is fine.

Why beat yourself up shooting fast loads. I've killed around seven or eight deer the last three years with three different 45-70s and all were loaded to around 1300-1400fps and I have yet to recover one bullet out of any of them. A 405g bullet will shoot end to end on any whitetail out to 100yds and isn't even slightly uncomfortable to shoot. Also very accurate with 2400, Rel7, or 4198.

I have been very pleased with the Barnes 300g SOCOM tipped TSX projectile (looks like a TMZ) over 53 gr of RL7. I use it in my Ultra hunter and as the first shot in my Henry lever action 45-70.

I hear what your saying but what fun is life if your not beating yourself up

My NEF 45-70 does not group well with light bullets, but shoots great with 405 gr cast and jacketed in front of 35.3gr of IMR3031 powder. It is considered low end trapdoor loads, but it has killed everything I have aimed at and groups well out to 200 yds. Good luck, Wallacem in Ga.

I've probably loaded and shot more 45/70 than any caliber I shoot. I've had great luck with AA2015. Here's a few groups shot with my Remlin GBL. This was with three different brands of bullets.

At only about 1800 fps it is deadly on whitetails.

The 45-70 is a great cartridge. In a strong action it is very versatile. Heavy bullets at low and medium speeds equal 2 large holes and great blood. Hit bone? No problem. Still probably 2 holes. Hunting inside 200 yds? Fantastic. Been hunting with my Savage using 370 hardcasts at 1400-1500 FPS and they are very lethal on deer at woods ranges. Can't be stopped on a deer.
Easy to reload, unlimited bullet selection in a wide variety of weights.
Nice shooting Deertroy.

I mainly use 3031 in my 45-70, 2200 fps with a 300 grain Hornady works great.

I am glad to hear good results with Reloader-7 I have 5 Pound of it I bought some time ago. Just picked up a 45-70 Encore barrel. dies, Bullets, and brass am going to try the loads suggested. I don't cast but have a friend who sent me some 300 grain w/gas checks. I believe the 45-70 has a 1-14 twist? I have2 other 45-70's that were converted to ML'ers. Amy one shooting RE-7 in the conversions? Lou
