I am new to smokeless powder;I had a custom muzzleloader built this past summer with 45 cal Mcgowen barrel. I have been shooting saboted bullets, but feel I can achieve better consistency(and range of course) with a non-saboted bullet. I would like to find a non-saboted bullet that I do not have to resize, as I do not have any equipment for resizing. Do any of the Parker BE, MH, Emax, or Barnes TEZ bullets fit a new Mcgowen barrel without the need to resize? How do the ballistics and consistency compare on the Parkers and Barnes bullets (using H4198) at shorter ranges and longer ranges? Any other info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am going to say that the the Barnes 290 TEZ that Luke sells will, in all probability, fit. You have to understand that there are manufacturing tolerances which might preclude this? Another bullet I shoot without sizing is the Hornady Action Pistol bullet called the: "230 gr. HAP". I have also shot Hornady's 200 gr. XTP without sizing. Some Parkers will and some will not fit? One or two ten thousandths of an inch (.0000") can be the difference in a bullet going down or not going down your bore. Richard

Actually, The last few batches of McGowens that I've sold have tightened up and can't be shot without sizing. The 290TEZ is definitely the smallest diameter, but without trying, no way to know for sure.

IMO at the very least you need a smooth form die. Having one really opens up all the options for sabotless shooting.

Completely agree here, I didn't want to order a sizing die myself I was stubborn for 2 years and now that I have one wish I would have done it sooner. Spend a $150 or so and order a swing loc or a sizing die from Jeff Hankins. I believe Luke has swing loc in stock and could get one from him also. It will be the best $ you spend also the bullets ate not always exactly the same size every time so you'll end up with different velocities which might cause an issue with accuracy.

If you go the adjustable sizing die route, don't worry if you don't have a press. With a tube of stick wax lube and a bench vise you can smooth size very very easily with just light raps with a hammer.

As Luke said. The McGowan I got from him this summer required tmz, tez, and 300 be to be sized. I thought I was in luck with the tez because it started at the muzzle buck got too tight half way down. I though the sizing was going to be a pain too but there is nothing to it. Get the Hankins die and a 30 dollar press from harbor freight and then you don't have to worry about it. Jason

Thanks guys. I may just buy a sizing die........probably won't regret it as new bullet technology develops in the future.

A wise choice if you want to shoot sabotless with different bullets.

Now your cooking with peanut oil. I was fortunate to get a barrel drop and am getting a dual purpose die, full and smooth form.

For sure the only way to go. Buy the smooth adjustable and you will realize the potential of your SML. I dragged my feet as well and am glad I had Luke send me one--worth the money if you are going sabotless.

TEZ's don't fit in my Mcgowen 45 that is a couple years old.

The TEZ .451 290gr Barnes all copper fit perfect in my 45 McGowan sabot less. I do not have to size them at all the 45 McGowan barrel is .450-.458. My son shoots them and has killed deer with them. After shooting a few of them he said that they are all he wants to shoot from now on. He said they are the best shooting bullet he has shot out of that 45 so far. It is a Stevens 200 SA with 209 bolt head and 45 McGowan barrel with a Savage BP.

The 290 TEZs will fit in my McGowen if the bore is clean. If it is fouled I am unable to get them down the bore or at least it would require more pressure than I want to use. The bullets get stuck barely on starting and I had to use a vise grips to get it out. I later tried with the breech plug out and had to use a long piece of brass to knock it out. Just a little fouling makes quite a difference when it is snug clean to start.
