I do not think the recoil lug set up on the axis could take a serious pounding. You do not see them chambered in anything stronger then a 30-06 or .308. You could probly cut the front of the action to take a regular recoil lug but the triggers suck.

I am not sure if we are talking .416 or .460 or if it really makes a difference.

Marv, are looking for a budget .416 muzzleloader?
Your post says .416 and .460, in the first post. So I don't know which caliber you're looking for.
I'm cleaning a bunch of muzzleloaders and barrels out the of safe. I've got a budget .416 for you. Send me a PM.

The recoil lug on the Axis just drops in a slot, Now the front action ring on the Axis is longer so you could trim it down to use the standard recoil lug. You would have to set it up in a lathe and basicly face the action. If you have a lathe and can do it yourself,,,, but if you have to pay to have it done your not saving much. My daughters boyfriend just picked up a brand new model 10 with Accutrigger for $499 +tax at a local gunshop.

just me but I believe I would scrap the Axis idea and get a better platform to build on. either way you go I would throw the barrel nut away so you can go with a full size shank. a good used remmy 700 SA would be more suitable but again that's JMO...

Is the bolt spacing on the short action Apex the same (or very close) to the same as the 10 series? As stated above I had considered facing the action, tossing the barrel nut and running a 1.20ish shank with a traditional rem/sav recoil lug. If the bolt spacing was close enough to just offset the pillars on install it would make the job easier and stock options more available. Is this a reasonable solution?
