I ordered two Savage breech plugs a while back. Haven't used either yet. Got one out yesterday to install in my 45. Noticed some dirt on it and got out a little wire brush to clean it. The brush rubbed chunks out of the nose end of the plug! I rubbed the other new plug with the brush and it did the same thing. Are these plugs made out of metal, or some sort of carbon fiber? I took pix of the damage and will upload them to Photobucket as soon as I find my cam cable! Boarhog

Wow that's terrible!! You need to return that one or throw it away at least. They are metal but I know they had a production run of them that was rejected. Maybe you were unlucky and ended up with one?

You got the new plastic prototype plug, just kidding, I am sure Savage will replace it for you and will be happy that you brought it to their attention.

Long time no hear. Unless they have really started slipping Savage should make good and atleast give you a thank you for bringing it to their attention? That should not have even made it through QC. Let us know how you make out.

That doesn't look good at all. When did you order that? The plugs I'm getting from them now have a nice dark finish.

I've decided rust is the culprit. Had the two plugs sitting on my desk overnight. When I looked at them today, it looked like more rust had bubbled up in the damage area. Although this metal is apparently very bad to rust, I don't think it is a Savage problem. I checked the gun box I had them in, and it looked like it had some moisture in the tray. I would love to find some stainless plugs that were mentioned on another thread.
Yeah, I have been away for too long. Had a stroke about 4 mo back, and naturally the dirty rat doctors found more health problems on top of that. I've also been very busy at work. Have had no bad effects from the stroke. Doing great so far! Trying to get back into shooting now. Good to be back! boarhog

What gun is it for Savage .50? I have a PA Machine Recessed Breechplug that would work for you. PM me if interested.

could it have been too hot of a heat treat thus boiling all the carbon to the surface?

Glad to see you back. I would not be to quick to take the blame. I've had plugs sitting for years with no ill effects. I can relate to medical problems. I had almost 5 mo. in the hospital then close to 2 mo. rehab to come home rehab and then back in for Whipple surgery and rehab again. The Dr. always seem to find something else to charge you for. Keep that cup half full and enjoy.

Now I'm going back to check my extra Savage plugs. when did you get the plugs?
Glad you are back. Noticed you were absent for a while. Yeah, I'm having to put projects on hold for just a little while, I hope. Typical aging process and parts not working and falling off and becoming unstable and unuseable, my parts, not the guns. Again, hope all well and getting better. 10 ga

Now you got me thinking. I had some surface rust on one of my "new" style Savage plugs and thought it somehow got some moisture it. Maybe not. It was on my workbench next to two "old" style plugs that were fine. Maybe there is more to this. I'm thinking these new plugs are really junk. JMO anyway. Jr
