On Monday after Zen and I set my 45 McRem up with the new .o4o bushing plug and large flame channel supplied by Luke we headed to the range for some testing. Part one of the testing was to see if my old chrono was reading correctly which it does seem to do so. And to test 73 grains of straight IMR 4198 and 250 SST. I had instant ignition every shot (only shot 7 times)! The bullets were loose enough I could almost let the ramrod push them down the barrel and smooth sized. At 100 yards I shot this group one being 300 SST and the three being 250 SST. First shot was way low because my turret was turned down too low because I bumped it after my goat hunt. My group isn't great but it's still pretty good. Picture isn't turned up right top is where the writing is. 200 yard group with 250 SST 2735 f/s 3 shot group 45 McRem 25" barrel 73 grains straight IMR 4198 Win 209 primer

The sst has a thicker jacket than the BE, so you don't get the benefit of as instantaneous obturation. Tightening the barrel fit up a bit will probably shrink that right down for you, but not a bad effort by any means.

Yesterday's test was just to make sure everything worked. Didn't know the bullets were sized as loose as they were. Going to try full forming the SST even though it isn't a true full form. Also going to smooth size some to for a little tighter see which one of the two perform better or just the same. As loose as they were I'm worried they wouldn't stay on the charge while hunting. I appreciate your comment, thanks!

Are you going to knurl them up as close to .458 as possible then ff them? Or just "smooth" form them through a FF die?
If you knurl up, one thing to watch for is indexing. When I tried this with mine, i discovered I have a particular groove that provides the best fit. Miss-align the bullet and it was a tough fit down the bore.

I'll probably start with full form see if I can get the right fit there first. If that doesn't work then I'll try knurling them and running threw the full form die.
Before I had the die I just had the piece of barrel and the best results I got were from knurling them up then pushing them threw the barrel.
My thought process with this is to have the bullet that much closer to being completely obturated into the barrel. Therefore making everything much more consistent.

Not sure if it will continue but I'm really hoping it will. Thanks Earnhardt for complement and thanks for figuring out the large flame channel at the moment I love it!

Do you have a plug that has a 90* sealing shoulder?

Do you have a plug that has a 90* sealing shoulder? I got a new plug from Luke beginning of last week from his supply. It's a .o4o bushing plug and zen and I drilled out the flame channel to 7/32 I believe. Biggest reason I did this was I was tired of changing ventliner and I was starting to get gas cutting in mine. So to answer your question I don't know.

When I tried this with mine, i discovered I have a particular groove that provides the best fit. Miss-align the bullet and it was a tough fit down the bore. Tried full forming them today without knurling them. That didn't work so looks like I'll be knurling them up then full forming them. The other thing I might have to do is undersize them then knurl back up. My biggest problem is my barrel is choked pretty good from what I feel. If the bullet isn't tight on the charge I'm afraid it could move off the charge and not shoot correctly. More to come.
