I have a McRem 45 and I'm having an issue with the way the bolt slides forward. Yesterday while I was shooting it feels like the action is not completely straight and causes the bolt to hang up. It's like the action is being bent and causes the bolt not to advance forward correctly.
Last time before my range session I thought I figured it out by taking the center of the three locking screws out and torquing the outside screws down to 40lbs. Then it worked great. Well now I'm back to the same problem after I just went threw and did the same thing.
Has anyone ran into this and if so how can I fix it? I've heard of laminate stocks swelling because of moisture and heat could this be my issue?

Looking at it now I'm starting to think pillar bedding it would help my issue with a laminate stock, would this be a correct statement?

Check the edge of the bolt retention raceway for a burr. That's usually what causes the bolt to bind in the action.

My plug had debris under it not letting it seat completely and caused my bolt to start closing hard then the bur developed good luck Drop

Check the face of the plug where it seals. Then the face of the barrel where it seats for carbon buildup. Drop

Take the burr off of the Bolt Retention Screw also.

Does the burr form after several shots and r your going to have to remove it on a normal basis? For both the bolt and screw?

Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

Once the two are "mated" together, Bolt and Bolt Retention Screw, there should not be any further issue unless you switch to a longer Primer such as a Winchester 209 keeping the same breechplug. What Primer are you using?

The Primer is not the issue. I have had to deburr all of mine. You should be good to go now.

I always contributed this problem happening when the primer fits a little tight and puts pressure on the retention bolt - raceway. If you feel it binding I would just check it again to be sure.

As Hunter and others have said its the bur that's the cause and a over tight primer fit is the problem. it wouldn't hurt to cut a little off the retention screw face (action side) to allow the screw to seat a little deeper in the groove. some only engage a slight amount which allows the bur to form much easier on the top edge of the groove. I have seen the same condition a few times myself.. Its hard to cut the screw down unless chuck it up in a lathe and use a cutoff tool. you could likely use a drill press to spin it and use a very small file. Or you could get Rossman to make you one slightly long and file it to size for full engagement..

I had Rossman make me a few in different lengths... Makes for a larger surface contact area on the bolt raceway where the retention screw rides. An assortment...since I doubt I will ever be done building...lol Drop

I use the same grease on the bearing surface of the grove and screw tip as I use on my centerfire bolt lugs to help with reduce screw wear and galling that causes the burr on the bolt grove.
