Utah muzzleloaders are required to have 1 power scopes or sights. I'm thinking of a red dot scope but I also have a regular Pentax 1 power scope. Any suggestions? What do they mean by "2 MOA" red dot? What is better for longer distance?

Is 2moa the minimum dot size or the required size? I'm unfamiliar with their regs. A 2 MOA dot will cover ~2" at 100yards and 4" at 200 and so on. I think a lot of dot sights ar around 4 MOA because they were designed for quick acquisition not pinpoint accuracy. In my experience only top dollar dot sights appreciate lots of recoil. For SML I would prefer a 1x scope over a dot just for the ability to be precise at extended distance even without magnification it is possible to shoot minute of game.

An EOTech will survive on a .50BMG but if you already have a Pentax I would try it before going to an RDS. If you go with an RDS stay at 2MOA or smaller.

the little pentax should work fine Phil and should be a little more precise than a RDS sight at distance.

I'm supposing fog not being an issue...but fiber optics sites would come in handy with questionable weather .....1x scope with moisture or open sites in low light...range is limited by circumstance but an open sited gun will perform....I outshot a couple scoped guns the other day ml shooting...

I have an Aimpoint 9000S on a 460 S&W with a 1moa dot. It takes a beating and holds zero. I would prefer it to open sights. Good luck.
