Hey fellas, I get on here and read occasionally and have always wanted to build a smokeless muzz but never got around to it because I bought a Knight muzzleloader off a memeber of this site a few years ago and it shot too well to justify the change. Well, my house was burglarized a few weeks ago most of my guns were stolen including the Knight. I had a bunch of custom hunting rifles and also shoot competitively and everything was lost except one 308 target rifle. I don't do as much deer hunting as I used to so I'm not going to try and replace all the rifles I lost. When I do hunt now it is usually on public land draw hunts that usually require a muzzleloader only so I would like to build a specialized rifle for this situation. I have a family member that owns a large pawn shop so I can get a used Remington 700 Ml for around 100$ or a Savage or Remington short action for around 250$. What would be the easiest one to use for a donor action and what other parts do I need to make it work? I was thinking of a Savage action with a 209 bolt face and pac nor barrel but I don't know if this would be the best option in my situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Easiest is putting a .45 barrel on a Savage 10ML-2. Next IMO is converting a Remington 700ml.

I really like my Stevens 200 45 McGowan with a Savage 209 bolt head it shoots the Barnes 290gr TEZ sabot less with 69gr of IMR4198 and a lubed wad Win209. I have a carbide vent Savage breech plug in it too. With no sizing of the Barnes 290gr TEZ they are all copper and are .451 the bore on the 45 is .450. My Stevens 200 started out as a .223 and I can change it back to .223 if I want to at anytime.

I would have to agree with Fishhawk. The 10ML-II would be easy and cheaper, the only special tool you would need would be a barrel nut wrench. The 700ML would almost be as easy, the only hard part would be putting a bevel on the breechplug for you headspacing. If you can get a 10ML-II with a laminate stock you would be ahead. 700MLs came in synthetic and if you put a heavy barrel on it you would have to change stocks because the stocks are so thin in the forearm. The 700ML is usually a tad more accurate then the 10ML-II. If you have access to a 10ML-II or a 700ML I wouldn't even mess with a CF action.
With the 10ML-II you would need a barrel and maybe a recoil lug.
With the 700ML you would need a barrel, breechplug, recoil lug and a Hunter bolt nose kit.
Put ether into a laminate or any stock of your choice and top off with decent scope mount then a decent scope and you would be ready to go.

If you can get your hands on a Savage VLP for $250, GRAB IT!! The laminated stock could be used, and would require very little, if any sanding in the barrel channel to open it up. From there, you would need only a barrel, BP and a 209 conversion kit. I almost did this with one of my VLP's for a switch barrel rifle, but they are so accurate, I didn't want to tempt fate.

If it were me building the rifle I'd choose a Remington 700 short action center fire.. Set it up with a Krieger or Brux barrel only and run LRM primers. You can shoot 275 grain bullets at 3000 FPS and shoot constant 1/2 groups. You can use a Boyd's laminated varmint stock and open up the barrel channel a little to except the larger barrel.

Get the savage short action and get the 209 bolt head conversion from Luke at ArrowHead Sporing Goods....He can sell you a barrel and breachplug and put it all together for you as well.... OR Have the pawnshop look out for a nice breakaction 45/70 24" or more preferably ...get it cheap and send it to Slufoot and you're good go....Sorry to hear about your robbery...that sucks....

700ml or 700 centerfire as a backup for me. Just love the feel of a 700.

Personally I dont think you can go wrong either way, Savage or Rem and theres always the chance you may end up with both before its over, like many others here. Do your research and build it to exactly what you want, and you'll be happy, no matter the platform you build off of.
