Today we had to put down our beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Spencer. We got him as a puppy and he just turned 10 in May. He suffered from congestive heart failure, a common disease with the breed. We lost his little sister Abbey at age 6, 11 months ago with the same problem. The past two nights his breathing was labored and he panted continuously. I doubt he slept at all. He has been taking a ton of medication but it was no longer helping. We thought for sure we would loose him during the night but that did not happen. Due to his suffering we felt it best to do the right thing. Hopefully, him and Abbey are playing in a place where there is no pain. With a sad heart.............. Richard

Sorry for your loss Richard. They just don't live long enough do they. Putting my 1st lab down 3 years ago is still one of the hardest things I've ever done.

Sorry for your loss, they are definitely family.
I think when that person came up with the phrase unconditional love they were thinking of their dog.

Sorry to hear about that. Sometimes one loves a dog even more than people, and it's really hard.
As they say, only love can break a heart, and only love can mend it again.
Time to test your puppy house training skills!

Richard
I know your pain and what you are experiencing. Only time will heal the hurt. The only consoling thought is the love and care you have provided throughout their short life for all they have given you in return.
Heartfelt and sorry for your loss.

I understand...I understand. They do not live long enough do they? Just put 5k into my 4 yr old shepard/golden for 2 ruptured ACL's a week apart in late may. She walks like e ding dong, and will for a while, but she is alive to lick my face every day. It is worth it.
I am sorry for your loss. A dogs love is unconditional with no strings attached. It's a bond different from human-to human. You don't know what they are saying but at the same time you sense what they mean. A dog is one hell of a friend on a very different level...but a friend none the less.
After watching some vid's on dogs and their masters, it seems like they suffer worse then we do if their master dies before they do. Have you ever seen the funeral of the fallen soldier and the dog was the last one out of the church? They love us too.
Only time heals the loss...man or dog. I hope you can find yourself a new dog. Not to replace, but to rekindle to timeless bond of dog and man. It makes home a home IMO.
Sucks when they go.

Terribly sorry to hear it Richard. Thanks for sharing with us, it always is better to embrace the pain than avoid it. It's hard to recover the companionship a loved pet provides, only time will tell you when you are ready to welcome another pup to your lives.

Hi Richard, I'm very sorry to hear about your dog. As others have already said, there is a very special bond and friendship that a dog gives us.
I heard this joke from someone along time ago and never forgot it. Put your wife and your dog in the trunk of your car and leave them in there for two hours. Open the hatch and see which one is glad to see you!
There's a lot of truth to that joke.

Tough news.
I doubt I get the chance, but if I do.....the first thing I'm gonna ask the Lord is "Why did you make dog's lives so short?".....

Richard, I , too, am sorry for your loss. We lost out Golden Retriever after 14 years (my son got him at 10). That was 3 years ago. Don't feel we could go thru that pain again. Not a day goes by that we don't miss him. I explained to my son that Chester had a wonderful life because of him. He gave love and certainly received love back. He had the best life possible. I'm sure Spencer and Abbey had the best lives possible because of you. As others have mentioned, dogs can have the type of unconditional love that is not equaled anywhere else except God's(and Jesus,HS) love for us. Dogs just have to be in Heaven, including Abbey and Spencer.
