Has anyone tried to load and shoot a .40 barnes expander with sabot in a 45-70?

Shot several out of 45/70 with breech plug installed "muzzle loader conversion" . But since you posted on modern rifle i'm curious what load setup your considering?

They use to make a 30-06 and 30-30 round with a saboted .224 cal. bullet. I was just wondering if anyone had tried a saboted bullet in the 45-70. I like the performance of the barnes expander in the 45 SML and was thinking it might make a sweet round for the new Ohio straight walled cartridge regulation if it would perform like my 45 SML. I don't think the modern sabot would chamber correctly in a cartridge, but was just curious.

Here's a thread in which this guy did it with the .45 Colt: www.shootersforum.com/handguns/4557-45-colt-@-1700-fps.htmlSince that caliber is .006 smaller than your .45-70, it might take some hefty knurling, but I'd bet it can be done. As it states in the thread, make sure you do not crimp the bullet/sabot combo like you would a bore sized bullet. I've been tempted to do this, but just a little leery about using them in a revolver.
