An even more awesome claim, is their .408 419gr that has a proven average BC of .948 to 3500 meters. I think I could participate in the Kentucky challenge from my house with that one. Earnhardt, I'm thinking landrider! Anneal the crap out of it and shove it down.

With a jacketed bullet like the Match Hunter maybe. The long "solids" are harder to fine tune and shoot well. Obturation and bullet swelling are key in getting the long solid ULD bullets to shoot. I've thought about building a .408, but I like the 416 Match Hunters too much.
If we could get an order of 600 bullets together we could order some lighter .408 MH's without the boat tails.

Earnhardt and Hankinsrfls both seem to do well with jacketed bullets--and they have demonstrated some of the best groupings on the Board. So I was pleasantly surprised when I got the CE 340 gr all copper bullet (always annealed) to shoot very well. I would be interested to know whether Earnhardt could get that Bullrt to shoot well by his standards without having to hammer it down -- maybe with a large-holed bushing.

cowhunter, I did a powder ignition test yesterday with the .416 and Retumbo, and the .041" x 1 bushing.
I'm not shooting 80 bullets like I did with the .458.
I shot 3- 350 MH's. They were sized at an very easy one hand loading, with normal seating pressure. 2 of the bullets went in the same hole with velocities of 2537 and 2541, the third was 2609 and was over an inch away. The primers were bulged pretty bad.
But here's the test that matters.
I then turn the Swing Lock die down 20 notches from the previous group. When I put the 350 MH in the bore, I could rattle the bullet back and forth it was so loose. I then tilted the barrel at a 45* angle so the bullet would slide down the barrel slowly onto the Retumbo. I pushed the rod down the barrel to make sure the bullet was on the powder and did not seat the bullet.
The bullet was sloppy loose with absolutely no seating pressure and the .041" x 1 bushing with the 209 primer ignited the powder. 2297 fps. The primer was bulged, but not too bad.
I know the .416 / 209 primer test is a very small sample, but I'll test it more when the 700 ML LRM adaptors are ready. So I can compare velocities and accuracy.
And I'll try the Savage Precision Rifle Variflame adaptor in the 416 with Retumbo, once I get a bushing in it.

Kash913 I assume those targets are from 25ft?! Darn good shooting rifle, have you been able to duplicate the pro's success?
A 420gr at 2825fps my gosh that has to BARK!

Also have you pushed a Lehigh through your full form die? If so how does the tapered bearing surface effect effort required? Looks like that design works well on the way out for sure!

No i only have 20 rounds thru the gun trying to get the feel for the gun the best i have done is 1'' at 200 yards with 375gr CE. First gun with a thumb hole stock. But i'm very confident the gun will shoot a whole lot better than my shooting abilities. LOL

And I'm dreading the thought of pushing a 300MH around 2700, the thought of sitting behind one of these cannons makes my eyes water....You guys are tougher than I...Cool stuff and very impressive, just not for my sissy shoulder.

kash913, those pictures bring a tear to my eye! That is great! Is the Swing Lock a 209 or LRM primered gun? Any plans to shoot long range with it any time soon? We need more posts from the Swing Lock guys shooting pointy boolits! Awesome!

yes without a brake these .416s are pretty mean, not that im afraid to shoot them but you make darn sure your form is good on the bench or you get punched pretty hard. kind of like a spin side kick from my martial arts days; ouch!

Jims, thanks for the info. I know a farmer down in whilshire that I can make 850 back to the river with a hill for backstop. If I can beat the crops I'll be down there. I will check about that range being usable anymore. I know there's a 1200 somewhere around Angola but I think membership is around 250 a year. Myers129 I think you are talking about Young's long range I call last year membership is $350 a year or 30-35 a day. how far are you from there? I think it be fun to get a couple people together and meet up there for a long day shooting

Hey Cowhunter, I ran into a friend I haven't seen since last fishing season, he calls me a "Musket Sniper".

Looks like they have cut it back to 1000 max from when I first heard about it. If the rate is $35 a day I would love to meet up there and fire some shots long range. I still have to assemble my .375 to really stand a chance but I will keep you in mind when it's finished. Maybe we can start a thread then and see how many we can get there. Deadeye, Jims and a couple others are up on my area and we can start a weekly collection to get cowhunter and Earnhardt airdropped in. I am in van wert ohio, it is about 1.5 hours from my place to youngs.

just looked at my estimated long range records- 327 @ 2625fps @ 875yds-estimated 41 moa/now 1,000 yd estimate would probably require a 20moa rail for me. if we can get cowhunter & Earnhardt here for that I will buy my 20moa rails//room & board & cerveza for those 2 gents-free @ my place. this is where the 416's will be givin the .458 an arsekickin. where is young's range? angola,in. ??

35 bucks! Just pull over on a long stretch of road and shoot off the tailgate. That's how a musket sniper would loose his musket. Kash: Those are some great tests of pointy bullets. I wonder how soft brass is and if it can be used for hunting.

Deadeye, it's just west of Angola, IN. Probably 2 hours or more for you isn't it? Cowhunter 35 bucks is pretty cheap for a day of it. Around here you can skip a bullet for miles and miles, land is flat as it gets. Start skipping bullets into buildings and it wouldnt take long for them to find the only guys launching $2.50 bullets out of muzzleloaders...

SNIP. I wonder how soft brass is and if it can be used for hunting. They are most likely using free machining brass ( 360 ). The most common version is 1/2 hard, definitely usable for hunting IF it has a hollow point which those do not appear to have. Good terminal ballistics probably require a fairly high impact velocity unless it has a very large meplat. edge.
