I am looking to get a good, not great spotting scope(Swarovski, Zeiss, ect). I am looking at a Leupold Gold Ring HD a guy here has used but worth the money. I was just wondering what your thoughts where on this scope and for a scope in the used, not used neighborhood of $750-$1000 or cheaper if there is a great buy out there. Thanks Jr

Don't know much about spotting scopes, I never used one much, but I do have a 12-24x50 Burris spotting scope that I dont use. Not sure if it will fit the bill for what you are looking for but I never use it and would be more than happy to sell it to someone who would. It came in a scope/spotting scope combo that Cabelas was selling a while back, it may have been taken outside twice since ive owned it, it has a soft carry case.

I have the golden ring 12x40 your talking about but not the HD version. I really like mine. It can be kind of a hard pill to swallow for some(the price of good optics) . But I would bet my money you would be more that happy with it. Drop

The Leupold Gold Ring is a good scope. The Swarovski is a great scope. I had the opportunity to compare a Swarovski to my non HD Leupold Gold Ring, which is about 12 years old. We were scoping various distances out to 2300 yards. The Swaro was clearer at the same power. One thing that stood out, which was something I hadn't done before, was to read heat waves. Trying to dope the wind was hard at that distance, especially if there wasn't any trees or vegetation. We would focus on a target on a rock face at 1500 yards, then back off the focus ring a bit, as if focusing at 1450 yards. With the Swaro you could see the heat waves and the direction of the wind. With my Leupold, I could not see the heat waves. Granted, most of the time that would not be a factor, but if into long range shooting, the Swaro would be my pick.
Good luck in your decision.
