I frequent Pensacola Fishing Forum and that's where I read about another API Climber chain coming apart and the guy fell 18 ft. and only had a bruise or two...he was very lucky IMO. I heard about the same thing last year by a boy that was in a club that I visited he ended up breaking his arm due to the fall.....WHY CAN"T API GET CHAINs OFF Of Their stands... What happens is is small hard limb can get in a link and when the user puts his weight on the chain the limb wedges/breaks the chain open.....I can't believe they still sell them....IMO 1 failure is too many when it comes to a tool that is made for climbing a tree.....

Agreed. I always thought/heard API's were top notch. A buddy of mine and his dad love em. I've never owned one, other than one lock on, it seemed ok, seat rotted out really fast on it tho. I just switched to a TimberTall climber. Haven't hunted out of it yet, but played with it at home and all I can say is wow. What an awesome climbing stand! Under 13lbs and fully adjustable top and bottom, even when ur up in the tree. So simple and so comfortable and an untouchable lifetime guarantee. TimberTall will even check all the welds, make any repairs needed, replace the cables and re powder coat everything for free down the road if you feel the stand needs anything, all you pay is shipping.

my api's have coated steel cables probably made in mid 90's-never had any problems with those & some have hung for 15yrs/sounds like they went cheap?

From what I've seen is its the climbers that use motorcycle chain instead of cable to go around the tree.....IMO cable works unless for some reason it gets bent at 90 degrees back and forth ...which I can't see happening....I use Summit's and am very satisfied on the design and function of all the ones I have....

Greenhorn has it right. People buy the aftermarket and much cheaper motorcycle chain. It is NOT the same construction! I have used APIs for years and I am not a small boy by any means. I am not the least bit afraid to use them and consider them some of the strongest and safest on the market and will continue to use them unless API is now using the motorcycle chain?

gotcha- I think my climbers are summit & warren & sweat iirc- the summit has a cable the others a alum biting blade- good to know this info on chains-been out of the tree stand market for a few years.

Tar I used the term "motorcycle chain" just to describe what they were using instead of multistrand cable....anyway the failures seem to happen when a hardwood stub gets inbetween the flats in a link....when you put your weight on it you wedge it apart and ....failure...It's happening on the other side of the tree/blindside so you never know when you set that chain right on a lightered knot sticking out....I've heard of quite a few failures ...most of the guys on the PFF are selling there API's now..IMO its just a bad design flaw...I don't want to trust my life to the weakest link in a chain.....Be Careful Man..

There are people selling actual motorcycle chain as replacement chain for APIs on Ebay. I saw it.This is bad news. If API is using a inferior chain now they can kiss my business good bye! I have been drooling over a TimberTall stand for some time now. It is time to pull the trigger on one!

I had an old API climber that I retrofitted with combine chain. Worked like a charm.

Were these guys not wearing a safety belt? The first rule of any treestand!!!. I use a climber a lot and move my safety harness up as i climb. If u do fall its not very far.
