Im new to this fourm and I love it.Ive just purchased a savage ML-ll stainless laminated stock.Ive finally rounded up me 2 brands of powder to try out in it n110 and H4198.Im trying to decide on a bullet/sabot combo.I'll probably give the barnes original 300gr with black harvester cruched rib a try for sure.I also like the looks of the parker bullets really well but dont know that much about them and what sabots I would need to use.I was also wondering if the barnes tipped triple shock in a .458 would work that may be a stupid question since its not a muzzleloading bullet but it looked the same.Im open to any kind of info you guys want to give out.

The 300boand black harvesters do well in most guns but sometimes the red crushed rib does better....Get with Luke and get him to set you up with a sampler pack of sabots to find out what combo has the tightest fit......The 325ftx are another bullet to shoot and cheaper than the Bo's.... Greenhorn

Luke is Arrowhead Sporting Goods. Congrats on your new gun. You have a lot of choices on powder bullet/sabot combonations. Luke would be a good place to start with a sampler pack to see what your gun likes.
A good place to start is with Savage Book loads. Check out the tips and hints section on this board.
My advise is to start with the book loads and learn your gun. I would leave the H4198 for later as it does provide some good recoil.
You have bought a great muzzleloader and it will tell you what it shoots best. Good Luck!

When I was shooting a 50 cal Savage the 300 BO / Black Crushed Rib Sabot and H4198 65-67gns was hands down the best combo I ever shot. The 275 Parker with Red Crushed Sabot and H4198 67-69gns was a good shooter also. I would say save your money on the Barnes Triple Shocks... Never could get those all coppers to compare with the BO.. THe .458 bullets seemed to be more consistently accurate than the .451'S to me....Good look on your new rifle. Zen

4 of the 5 in my area use the 250 FTX with either duplex or book powders and either the MMP HPH 12 or 24.

Are you talking about the .458 barnes socom bullet? One issue with it saboted in a .50 is that it is a boat tail bullet I believe, and I'm not aware of a good sabot match for it. You would probably be better off with the standard 290gr TEZ which is .451 and look for a sabot that provides a good medium tight fit.

Going by what I have learned after 100s and 100s of shots, you will be better served by staying away from all copper bulets at least for now, untill you achieve the accuracy results you are looking for with standard lead/copper clad bullets.
A superb all around bullet for use in the 10ML-II is the extremely afordable 300 grain, .451" Hornady XTP, and even better is the Hornady 325 grain .458" FTX. Both have as good a performance record in terms of accuracy and terminal performance on deer as any out there, and both are quite reasonable in cost.
The sobots I have used and prefer are Harvester Black Crushed Rib for use with all .458" bullets, and the standard Harvester Black sabot and the Harvester Red Crushed Rib sabot.
Phone Harvester and tell them the type, OD, and weight of bullet(s) you plan on starting with and ask them to PLEASE, send you a free sabot samble pack to try. You will have to perfrom how ever many "Dry Run Loadings" of saboted bullets combinations to determine which bullet & sabot combination gives you the best fit interms of tight fitting. Just remeber you do this on a clean barrel with the breach plug removed.
You will also find a suberb wealth of beginner information at the "Tips and Hints" section of this website.
Best of luck, Arthur.

welcome tnhunter! I too started with a factory savage, blue with camo tupperware stock. Still have it and shoots real good. There is a whole lot to learn that is different from shooting black/sub powders. Ask questions, use the search engine, and heed the advice on safety. Follow this link to some newbie info and follow the enclosed links. It'll be sorta a shortcut to getting started with the MLII. dougsmessageboards.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=smokeless&thread=10086&page=1I suggest starting with book powders. CCI or Federal primers. Mark your ramrod. Always think safety first. Again welcome. Best, 10 ga
