I started reloading because I figured I could save money and mess around with 110-130 gr loads on the 308 to pratice trigger control with low recoil loads. I've been chasing various rounds in various guns for years looking for a round that in my mind would work for deer but yet my grandkids and women would enjoy shooting. I'm not trying to start a 243 discussion but I feel 7mm - 30 cal should be the starting point for my requirements. Long story short, I'm back where I started oh so many years ago, take a 308, (I can't get the 06 to group under 1 1/2 at 50)load it with 170 30-30 flat points, load to 30-30 velocities and presto here it is. The 160 ftx sitting on re 15 was the test today, cover leaf @ 50 and a hair under 1 @ 100. Had the same results last week with the horn 170's. There just so much more one can do if you roll your own

The 30-30 has killed many deer over the years. If your ranges are not long that powder/power combo should work well.

I recommend you try few rounds of 7MM Mauser. A 140 or 150 grain Sierra SBT #1905 or #1910 bullets; behind it 40 grains of IMR-4895 will give you about 2600 fps, and the kick will be very manageable by almost all females I have seen shooting it. And that is a Remington Classic 700 in 7mm Mauser with 4-12 power scope on it. I say weighs about 10 lbs.

zubin, I got a 7 x 57, a 708 that should also work fine. I believe that a 30-30 should of been dead a long time ago, but it's still here with us today alive and kicking. My theory on this is that the 30-30 bullets are built for the velocities that a 30-30 produces, they are not made to go from mediocer velocities to the 300 mags, so they do what they need to do at lower velocities. Yep 125 maybe 150 yards is about all you get but the new hornady bullets might stretch that a bit. And they are very easy on the shoulder in the encore I've got and in the 308 loaded down.
