I decided to cut 3" off of my 50 cal. barrel. Took it to the range yesterday to try it out before I finished buffing the crown. I shot 6 shots with 4759 and 250 gr. xtp's which shot over 3" group. Then tried my old hunting round .458 hornady 300 gr. with orange mmp over 42 gr. 4759 and 4 shots could be covered with a quarter, the 5th shot ended up about a 1/3 of the hole was outside of the quarter. The range was only 57 yards but I really liked the results.
Can anyone tell me what powders that I can use,(if any) in this barrel length to reach 2300 fps. with the 300 gr bullets. I have 4759, vv-110, and h4198. I am sure the 4198 will not work well in the 21" barrel.

I have a barrel I cut down to 22". I shoot a 10/60 5744/H-4198 duplex, Rem. 458 300 gr. and black crush rib sabot which gets 2465 fps in a 24" barrel. In the 22" barrel it got 2385 fps. So, I would guess at 21" you could keep it at 2300 + fps. Richard

hunter Here are some results with my 21" barrel. Since my post below post I've decided to stick with RL7 65-67gns. In that range I get 2225-2275 fps. with a 300gn bullet. It has proved to be the most accurate at both 100yds and 200yds. I lost about 100fps but didn't lose a thing in accuracy. H4198 used to give me the most fps and the best accuracy but since cutting the barrel things have changed. I bought some N110 thinking that since it was a faster burning powder it would work well in the shorter barrel with 300gn bullets. 45gns gave me 2200fps but I couldn't get it to shoot better than 3". Same with 42 and 43gns. That's the only powder I ever shot that didn't seem to work with the Remington 300gn HP. The only combo that I've tried that reached 2300fps were duplex loads [shown in the other post]. I'm pleased with the results of the modifications I've made with my Savage. It once weighed in at 11 1/4#, now it's 8 3/4#, and it's still a good 200yd shooter. I think I will try the N110 with 43-45 gr. and see how it performs, also 44-45 gr of 4759. I would like a single powder if possible for hunting. If these loads are not accurate I will try the duplex. I will probably try 4759 as a starter since I already have it. What is the recoil of a 10/60 duplex with 4198 vs. the straight charge of 68 gr. 4198.
Thanks for the replys
