I was wondering if you guys think the 200 SST/SW will ever have a sabot made for it that will make it shoot with a full house load of smokeless at top speeds from a .50??

The commercially avail. sabots will not with stand the pressure of smokeless with the 200SSt or the Barnes 195. I have tried them with MMP sub bases, 28 ga. cups, nylon and alum. washers; NOTHING, all the sabots are drilled once you try and push them to full load smokless speed. I have used 2400, N110, N120, 4198, 322. I have shot both bullets with 140 gr. of BH 209 and the sabots did not drill but this is in the 2300 fps range. This is plenty fast for a whitetail or woodchuck! Mike

Somebody here came up with the .050 rule, the bullet has to be within that size of the bore or the commercial sabots do not work well. A .45 in a .50 barrel, a .40 in a .45 barrel.

I tried to shoot the 200 grain bullet in the 50 caliber rifle many times. There was in fact a number of shooters working on the problem at the same time. We were working under a simple premise: whatever solution worked would have to be available to anyone. If it couldn't be done or bought by any shooter it was not a proper solution. Some ideas worked but the ones that did would not meet the above stipulation. Finally the 45 caliber barrel was attempted and it worked. In the end anyone can have a 45 and you use commonly purchased components. Some might question the price as the barrel alone is a plus $300 item. However many decided that more money that provided custom rifle accuracy and speed was better than continuing to spend smaller amounts that essentially provided nothing. From Jim: Somebody here came up with the .050 rule, the bullet has to be within that size of the bore or the commercial sabots do not work well. A .45 in a .50 barrel, a .40 in a .45 barrel. Jim that's a pretty good rule. That feller must know what he's doing.
