L-R, Speer 40cal 180gr Gold Dot, Remington .458 300gr with Smokeeaters nose mod, Hornady 250gr SST, Hornady .458 325gr Flex Tip. I was surprised by the plating thickness of the Gold Dot, definitely not your typical plated bullet, if the bigger cals are simular in thickness, just might show some sabotless possibalities. The 325gr .458 I wanted to size down and try sabotless this weekend, but that jacket sure is thick. The SST's flew well last weekend, so maybe there is hope

8-)Al I cut some cross sections like this a few years back (hope I can find the image) but the jackets do seem thicker than I remember. Even the 250 grain SST seems to have a thicker jacket than I remember.

Thanks for the pics. Can I ask how you did it without wrecking havoc on the tip?

I read where Davey Crockett or Daniel Boone once shot half lead round balls and used half the powder so he could conserve the rest. He must have gotten twice as close. I do not know if this is legend or fact. I am old but not old enough to have talked to him personally. Good job in cutting those for us to view.

Very nice cutting and a great Photo! It amazes me how the SST can shoot accurately in some guns. I have always known/thought that bullet Balance was so important. look at the lead in the two SSTs, it isn't even close to being uniform around the plastic tip thing. Just an observation Ken

I have always known/thought that bullet Balance was so important. look at the lead in the two SSTs, it isn't even close to being uniform around the plastic tip thing. Just an observation Ken Ken, the left side lead of the SST is just a sliver of material the cutter rolled in, it picked out with no problem. The 325gr, the SST's have big scallops in the nose, I didn't get that one lined up too good in the vise, and the right side by the tip, is where that scallop folds back into the nose.
