Hello savage muzzleloader gurus, I recently purchased an older (2003) 10 ml II, and I have a few questions. Which primers tend to perform better, right now I use winchester 209 ? The only load I have tried so far is 48gr. of IMR 4227 and it produces around a 2" group @ 100yds. I'd like to try different recipes to tighten the group. Any info provided would be greatly appreciated. Also, does anyone make a sturdy ramrod, the one with the savage seems like plastic

4227 is not a good powder choice. When it works, it works very well. I had some of my best groups with it in the 50. Unfortunately, when you least expect it, instead of a "bang" you will only get a "poof". This is most likely on a cold November day when you have a 10 pointer in your sights. It is much harder to ignite than 5744, 4759 or N110. You should be able to find at least one of those three locally. Win 209s, Federals, CCIs all work. Some use one and some another. I had problems with the Wins sticking in the holder on my gun so changed to the CCIs. Both performed well, but the CCIs did not have to be removed with pliers so that is what I stick with.

If you are set on using 4227, and I have a friend that uses it exclusively, I would use a Magnum primer...probably Federal or CCI.

Thanks all, how about a sturdier ramrod, when seating the bullet it bends alot. How much difference is there between harvester and mmp sabots, and is one inherently more consistent?

Hello Tarheel, As far as the sabots, it depends on your gun. The trick is getting a good bullet/sabot comb. that fits your barrel. Some barrels are slightly larger or tighter than others. I have 2 MLIIs . One likes 250sst and smmp the other tight barrel gun likes the short harvester and 250sst. Larry

i would recomend trying a different powder but like said if that is the one you want to use try the fed 209As. as to the ram rod , alot here ,including me, use a T/C power rod i think its 21 inch.
as to sabot tight is right. you need to find a bullet sabot combo that fits good in your gun.
