Reader PLEASE NOTE that this load and bullet combo creates slightly under 50 Kpsi (thanks to traces by TGinPA) and is deemed safe in my barrel but may not be in yours. I have accepted the fact that shooting the heavier bullets out of a .45 caliber barrel have pushed me over the 40,000 Kpsi lighter bullet max created by RBinAR. In doing so I have accepted the fact that I have removed a certain margin of safety in case I screw up and double load or shoot my ramrod down range.
This was my third outing with the Pacnor since I finished putting it together. Results more or less mirrored my second range session which is good for repeatable results.
Setup:
- Pacnor #7 contour 25 inch long barrel.
- Stock with aluminum bedding block, skim bedded using pillar shims from ernie the gunsmith.
- Rem 700 ML action and trigger with 2 lb spring.
- Calahan recoil lug.
- leupold QRW rings and bases sporting a nikon 4.5 x 14 buckmaster.
- Savage hex head breech plug.
- Lehigh ventliner.
- CCI 209 Mag. primer.
Note: Speeds were a little higher that what they should be because I forgot to push the chrono all the way down so the back sensor was about 1/4 inch closer than full open. Opps.
Lessons learned:
- Using a wool wad under a Full Formed bullet helps with extreme spreads even the boat tail SOCOM bullet.
Things to note:
- All bullets loaded with one and two arms and about 40 to 60 pounds of pressure on a clean barrel but once barrel was fouled was 40 to 80 pounds of pressure to load.
- Same load through out range session 15 grains over 55 grains - N110/ H322 and this load has some kick but not terrible to shoulder.
- This load is not to bad on vents I can get over 60 shots before it exceeds .035
- POA for all targets was the red circle with crosshairs in it.
- Barnes TSX loaded a little loose and checked when I got home and it can take a half a notch increase in the die setting.
Bullets used were: (all .458)
Nosler 300 RN CT
Barnes 300 TSX FB(not the FN)
Banes 300 TTSX SOCOM
