WOULD A 28 GA WAD WORK AS A SABOT IN THE .50? WHAT DIAMETER BULLET COULD BE USED? ANYONE TRY THIS YET? PEOPLE USE THEM FOR SUB BASES. INEXPENSIVE SABOT IF IT WOULD WORK.

They would not work well as a sabot and their use as a sub base is not needed with a properly selected load.
What is your reason for considering it? Do you have a bag of 500?

I used them for sub bases for a very short time. I do not use them anymore and found them not necessary. I do have a 28 gauge so I do have a use for them there.

I have used them before MMP came out with their sub wads. Just cut the petals off. Very inexpensive. I now use the MMP sub wads. What I found is a very small drop in velocity with sub wads and that the only benefit was on very hot days I get less flyer's and dont have to wait between shots as much. The MMP have a domed top and fit exact under the sabot.

Toby and I played around with them about 5 years ago with reasonable accuracy. I'm cheap too, that was why I started using them instead of cutting petals off of MMP sabots in the era of the sub base To make them work, you need to cut the petals TWICE. The first is the length, I cut them to around the beginning of the ogive for whatever bullet you use; Secondly you need to cut vertically down the petal to remove about 0.050 of the petal width. The reason is that the wad is designed to go into a 0.550 diameter and the petals will overlap in a 0.508 bore making it too tight to ram home! One last disclaimer, if using AA wads you need PINK and NOT RED! You will not be able to load the RED wads! edge.
