Got sent home today from work..I fixed the sink drip. And Was goimg to go shoot a few today. But the wind just kicked up and the weather man says 18-20 mph rest of today. So it looks like a day to clean the savage and measure out some of my new 4198. How many loads do you load up when checking for accuracy? I shoot from a sled so as not to goof anything up. I thought 5-6 of each would be enough..But I am a newbie here. I have 100 vials. 3 kinds of powder -3 kinds of bullets and 4 or 5 kinds of sabot's. But some are the red sst ez glide type..Left over from my Encore. Maybe I will push a couple down the barrel to check them out. My gun has about 35 shots through it with 44gr of 5744 and about 15 of 4759. Is it time to drill the plug yet? And ya rekon the ventliner is still OK ? Thanks all Drop

my ml shoots ok with the ez sabots but my sons ml goes 'pop'. bp and vl should be ok for awhile yet. i don't weigh any charges, just use a lee 3.4 dipper. 3.1 for target shooting. don't worry about the wind. pretend your out hunting. i shot at 50 yds yesterday in the same conditions.

I pulled it apart and cleaned it up..It took 15 patches to get it clean. I really question if or not I got it clean from the factory. I scraped a little carbon from the plug and put antisieze on it and the ventliner and put her back together. Now I think I am going to order some SST's and a couple Breech plug's and a few factory ventliner's Boss just called and says take tomorrow off too... Not looking to good here. Drop

Here's what has worked for me and many others I helped locally with their new savages. I'd weigh all charges to eliminate any variances. I generally take 9 or more vials of each charge with me as I'd rather have to many. I'd focus on one powder type at a time especially if you're trying different charges & bullets at the same range trip. Make one change at a time and make notes to review later. I also don't clean the carbon out the middle of my breech plugs, just clean the primer pocket and change my vents out every 50 shots which is premature but this eliminates the worn vent/poor accuracy variable. I'll bet my bottom dollar the red sst e-z glides will be too loose, but if you're determined to try them I'd knurl your .452 dia bullets between two files or otherwise use the Harvester Red Crush Ribs. This is all purely my opinion so to take it with a grain of salt : )

Droptine.........Why not stop by your local welding shop supplier or even maybe Home Depot or Lowe's in the welding department and pick up a cheap set of torch tip cleaners. These along with a caliper or micrometer and you can check your ventliners to see how big the hole is. Better than guessing. You might even go into the wife's sewing box and check various pins and needles and come up with some good gauges. Richard

I will pick up a tip cleaner tomorrow. I have a small mic and some caliper's. What is the largest I should let the vent liner get up to ? Drop

But I might run 1 down the barrel just to check it out. Drop smitty

It definately won't hurt to run one down the barrel and see how they fit and then knurl a bullet and see how they fit also. Last year I thought I'd found the magic load for one of my guns which was 59gr of Imr 4198 (metal can) and a knurled 300gr sst in one of those red e-z glide sabots. On several range visits my first three shots with this load would all touch at 100 if I did my part. Well ...... then I ran out of the metal can batch and I never could duplicate it with the new plastic jug powder even after adjusting the load up and down several grains ? And then I had a couple misfires surely due to the lighter loading pressure so I switched to H4198 & the red crush ribs which have worked well.
