I have tried to photograph the damage I did to my replacement barrel about a year ago. If you look at the breechplug you can see at the bottom near the vent liner where there is a chunk out. The next photo is the cut off section of the barrel breech, the bulge may be hard to see. The damage to the barrel nut is not, it is quite obvious. The barrel was magnafluxed and was proofed after that. There is not enough diameter left to cut any more off at the breech. In the middle photo I have some backlight on the barrel chunk and you can better see that it is not flat in the bulge area.

Yes, a double powder load. I was in too much of a hurry trying to get ready for a shoot and I did all the wrong things that I know better. Different loads and powders, saboted and sabotless and thus I did not have a consistent witness mark and I never noticed the double powder load.

Similar occurance with less visible damage. Guess we both had "learning experiences". Hopefully, they are the "once in a lifetime" kind.

Jims, by double you mean-1 load of powder, bullet on top+ another load of powder and another bullet, or was it 2 loads of powder and 1 bullet on top? Also what is "magnafluxed"? Any stress to the receiver? Good Lord looked after you, glad you are OK.

These pictures confirms what edge has always stated weak area is were the barrel has been bored out for the breach plug and external threads for recoil lug-lock nut!

Olegburn: To clarify it was a double load of an inappropriate powder combined with one sabotless bullet but that was way too much. No double bullets. The damage was forward of the receiver itself but it took some effort to open the bolt as I recall. Magnafluxing ( I do not know the scientific terms) is a sort of powder put on metal such that you can determine if there is a crack or break in the same that is otherwise nearly undetectable to the eye alone. Rossmand or edge will be able to give a better explanation but in effect I could check to make sure the barrel was able to be safely reused or if it had a latent defect that could have caused a future failure.

The second picture really shows a lot. Sometimes I think being reminded that accidents can happen is a good thing. Jims, sorry it was at your expense, but thanks for posting the pics.
