Over at the RW siteHe has a new breech plug for the MLII that uses a 3/8 socket to remove it ..Has anybody seen one? I think they are the new Savage replacement. Thinking about getting a couple of them if they indeed are that..Are they available from Savage direct? and also where is the best place to get ventliners. How much are they at Savage? Thanks Drop

I get ventliners direct from Savage--I think they are about $3 a piece. Last year I bought 10 ventliners from Savage and they are $3 a piece. The allen hole is shallower then what they used to be which makes it harder to get the ventliner out. If I had to do it over again they will come from Precision Rifle. I heard they last as long as RW ventliners but heck of a lot cheaper. Steve

Are the PR bullets vents shorter than the factory ones or the same length? I heard that RW's were shorter and once you switched you are stuck because you won't be able to use factory ones again due to carbon build-up in the threads?

Just soak the BP with hoppes #9, then drill and run a 10-32 tap thru it and you're goldern, if you want to go back to the stock vents.

Last fall I got 24 vents from PR Bullets and was really disappointed with their quality. Could only using about half of what I purchased. One vent didn't have a hole and several weren't drilled all the way thru but the real issue to me was that a larger size drill bit (like a .040 dia or so) was used to start the hole at each end so just the very middle of the vent hole was .030 or .033 . I don't like bashing anyone or their products so hopefully I just got a bad batch.

You can buy the new breech plugs from Savage direct. I brought two, I not sure of the price, although I did post pictures of the new 3/8 plugs, I think for the pair it was 66.00

I also got a half dozen vents from Cecil's earlier last year and they were fine ? And yes I should have called Cecil to let him know but I didn't so I guess I shouldn't complain.

So will this new breech plug eliminate the need for a third pillar ? Since you would no longer need to remove the bolt screw to take out the plug any more? Thanks Drop

The half that had the holes right thru worked good, the others not so good.

Paul,
Be reasonable, you want holes in all of them. Just think of all the powder and bullets you will save, with the un-holed ones.

It's hard to beat that Savage price and shipping costs, I bet they even shipped them today. ;D I find that a 1/4" drive 3/8" socket with a swivel and short extention will easily remove the new plug. Droptine.........You are still going to remove the breechplug to keep it from getting stuck! If you don't want to do the third pillar, at least do a decent bedding job so when you do remove the bolt, the barreled action will seat back in the same position. Richard

Hi Richard. Ya rekon there is enough room with the new style plug to get it out without removing the bolt though?. I am getting up the courage to start grinding out the inside's of my tupperware stock, install a ramrod tube and try bedding it..I discovered today that my laminate stock ..If the ramrod is in it you cant slide a dollar bill up the barrel..However if you take the rod out then it slides up to the action without contact... But as I said I am going to practice on my tupperware first..I am sure I will be calling you if you don't mind. Thanks Drop

I'm never one to defend Randy but in this case a tap or wire brush would be all it takes primer crud isn't that tough.

drop, I understood that was the whole point of the new bp design, to allow easy removal of the bp without removing the bolt.
