Reader PLEASE NOTE that this load and bullet combo creates slightly under 50 Kpsi (thanks to traces by TGinPA) and is deemed safe in my barrel but may not be in yours. I have accepted the fact that shooting the heavier bullets out of a .45 caliber barrel have pushed me over the 40,000 Kpsi lighter bullet max created by RBinAR. In doing so I have accepted the fact that I have removed a certain margin of safety in case I screw up and double load or shoot my ramrod down range.
This was my second outing with the Pacnor since I finished putting it together.
Setup:
- Pacnor #7 contour 25 inch long barrel.
- Stock with aluminum bedding block, skim bedded using pillar shims from ernie the gunsmith.
- Rem 700 ML action and trigger with 2 lb spring.
- Calahan recoil lug.
- leupold QRW rings and bases sporting a nikon 4.5 x 14 buckmaster.
- Savage hex head breech plug.
- Lehigh ventliner.
- Fed 209A primer.
Lessons learned:
- Using a wool wad under a Full Formed bullet helps with extreme spreads.
- Cannot get the 325 FTX to group as well as the other bullets and will probably pull it from my testing.
A big thank you to rangeball for getting me to try the Barnes TSX and rossman40 for getting me to try the Nosler these are now my two favorite bullets to shoot. Also TGinPA for the pressure trace on this load.
Things to note:
- All bullets loaded with one and two arms and about 40 to 60 pounds of pressure on a clean barrel but once barrel was fouled was 40 to 80 pounds of pressure to load. Shot about 4 foulers before shot for groups.
- Same load through out range session 15 grains over 55 grains - N110/ H322 and this load has some kick but not terrible to shoulder.
- I only had time for 100 yards and got cut short when I got a Barnes Socom bullet stuck in the barrel. Opps. I think I went to aggressive with the die setting for these I have to back off a notch.
- POA for all targets was the red circle with crosshairs in it.
- It was a great day and had a lot of fun wind was 3 to 5 in my face and temps went from 60 to 79 degrees.
Bullets used were: (all .458)
Hornady 325 FTX
Nosler 300 RN CT - thanks to rossman 40
Barnes 300 TSX FB(not the FN) - thanks to rangeball
Banes 300 TTSX SOCOM
Future range sessions will be without the 325 FTX and will try to repeat the 100 yard performance as well as take it out to 200 yards.
